MN regs are in stores

The speed limit is also the law, don't know about you but they are generally "suggested guidelines" to me when driving
Yes ,, We all speed ect. But to be vindictive to the dnr to skew numbers just makes no sense . When its reduced to its just their rule suddenly other rules aren't as important either , personally I wont go there for a goal

If a guy buys both archery and firearm licenses then no additional fee, right? I buy an archery license, and shoot a buck. Then I buy a firearm license and "shoot" a doe and register it in a managed area.
I think you have to buy that additional antlerless tag to shoot the doe. You used your either sex (one opportunity per year) tag with archery. Primary rifle tag can not be used, only bonus tag.

Change my rifle words to firearm in your area.

At least you're not as bad off as I am. It would cost me about $500 to chase one deer with three weapons on my own land because I'm an SD guy now.

At first I bought bow and rifle, last year I just bought rifle. Had we another terrible winter and new regs like this, it'd have just been a small game license for this season. Now I feel like i've gotta try to pull down one of the doe tags and set fire to it in rebellion.

I don't think he can legally shoot a buck with the mzzle since his primary tag was used in the Lottery area. Legal party hunting would allow him to shoot a legal buck.

Maybe we need a program to define what party hunting is. How about a retired game warden to speak up? Who knows one?

As of a several years ago now we are allowed to use multiple main/primary tags. Just got to adhere to the areas limits for number of deer tagged per person (1,2,5) and make sure to have a buck tag for a buck, and a doe tag for a doe. So it is perfectly legal to use a main rifle tag on a doe in a lottery area after winning the lottery, then to use the main muzzleloader tag on a doe or buck in a managed area during muzzy season. Heck, could even go buy a bonus tag and get another doe in the managed area as the 1 lottery deer doesn't count against the 2 managed limit.

Page 69 or so of the regs.

Thank you for pointing out that change. Confusing as heck. I still wonder about taking the three deer, two in managed and one in lottery.
It looks like landowner tags are gone in 221 as we are Lottery.

The lack of landowner tags is the only good thing I've seen for 249.

Looks good, another good winter and most of the state that has habitat should be back into managed. DNR is doing a great job.

Press release from DNR says central MN browse is obvious. May send them an email to let them know that is what deer eat.

Browsing is minimal at my place. I need a bush hog where I never had to maintain trails before. :( I don't have a bush hog either.

By the sound of that ^^^ report you guys have more deer over there than we have east of the river!

Is it a coincidence that DNR staff frequent these forums, and now there are mentions or 'obvious browse' in the area? I think not. They own the spin machine unless we derail it.

Anybody have a prime parcel in mind I can lease to start the Hunter Managed Herds Initiative? It can be expensive-

Foggy know any great spots in the high density lakes area I can contact?

Enjoy!!! :

.....

I think the answer to the first couple replies in this thread have been answered. Didn't want to release anything online before the DNR's public relation blitz the last few days. I have played close attention to the regs for about the past 15 years and have never seen and heard anything like it from our DNR. Many reports all telling the sheep that this is a conservative set of regs and that we have a bunch of deer. It will be interesting to compare this years harvest to that of other recovery years. Will this years harvest be as conservative as 1997? 1972 or whatever year after the last time the deer season completely closed?

I don't know if I'm going to allow hunting this year. I don't know if I'll trap either - giving the DNR $100 for this BS isn't sitting well right now.

Maybe I'll see if my BIL will bring me with to his place in WI. He's got large "coyote" problems there too.

They own the spin machine no matter what. All they have to do is release information and all the papers and news outlets pick it up and spit it back out.

But they have to be careful when those who are paying attention don't let it slide. Losing hunter support for their goals is a slippery slope for certain. If hot pockets keep popping up, they have lost control. When you are charged with regulating a resource and you lose control, you got some 'splaining to do.

Jim, do you mean he has a large problem with the "coyotes" or he has large "coyotes" that cause him problems?;)

Sad as it is to say...I hope a large percentage of deer hunters don't buy licenses this year and even more don't buy them next year....

Sadder to say it but has been slowly playing out for 10 years. PA went from 1.4 million to under 1 million deer hunters (correct me if I am wrong). Less deer. MN is down 10+% last 10 years and it will keep dropping unless we manage for more deer.

That has got to be one thankless and very difficult job. Having multiple bosses, all of which have different agendas. Constantly having to memorize and convincingly spit out prepared party line speeches. And all the while hoping to keep ones job. I'm exhausted just thinking about it

You need look no further than the DNR ban on saying 'net' when discussing Mille Lacs to realize its a political issue we are fighting.

Ya know, we have had anywhere from 2-6 deer on camera at one time in our little 1/6th acre soybean plot. While that plot has been consistently trimmed back, there has always been plenty left to eat (given the comparison to a heavily browsed soy plot). I've got an eagle eye when it comes to spotting browse in the woods. I have not seen much browse at all on our property. Even the little patches of clover here and there, you're lucky to find 5 stems in any one spot where a deer stopped and ate. With all the rain and subsequent tonnage of browse this year, I don't know how they can claim browse damage anywhere other than a severe hot pocket or no hunting area. Between adults and fawns, we've probably got ten deer that move through our place, and they're not doing their job to keep the brush down. Judging by the frequency of our pics, they're not wandering too far from the beans either.

Pretty comical spins.

I would love someone to point out any browsing issues at our place, and we have some of the higher density goals in the state. If we dont have it where they claim to manage at higher numbers, how the heck is central MN all of a sudden over run with deer.

Pretty sad is more like it. Lots of people reading their local rags will buy right into it and think nothing else of it.

Jim, do you mean he has a large problem with the "coyotes" or he has large "coyotes" that cause him problems?;)

He has large coyotes that cause him problems.
