Our elected are warming to an audit of the deer model, with more committing each week, but the more they hear the better.

Most of the state has been neglected since 2005, and the new hunter satisfaction surveys are an alarming wake up call, and a great tool for change.

Dear elected,

I deer hunt zone ---. There are not enough deer left where I hunt. (insert verbage from choices below)

Please support the proposed audit of our DNR deer model. The 9% scheduled statewide herd reduction has gone too far, and our MN DNR will not admit anything is wrong. They need your help to put them back on course.

Thank you-

(your name)

(Superior Uplands 117, 122, 126, 127, or 180) Hunter satisfaction with deer seen on stand was over 60% in surveyed areas in 2005. 10 years later our area has dropped under 20%. Its not all wolves and winter. Years of excessive doe harvest and a failing model have decimated the herd.

(North Central Plains 169, 172, 184, 197, 210, or 298)

Hunter satisfaction with deer seen on stand was over 60% in surveyed areas in 2005. 10 years later our area has dropped under 15%. Its not all wolves and winter. Years of excessive doe harvest and a failing model have decimated the herd.

(Pine Moraines 241, 242, 246, 248, 251, 258, 259, or 287)

Hunter satisfaction with deer numbers was over 60% in surveyed areas in 2005. 10 years later our area has dropped to 31%. Its not all wolves and winter. Years of excessive doe harvest and a failing model have decimated the herd.

(East Central Uplands 152, 155, 156, 157, 159, 183, 221, 222, 225, 247, or 249)
Hunter satisfaction with deer numbers in the area was over 60% in surveyed areas in 2005. 10 years later our area has dropped to 19%. Its not all wolves and winter. Years of excessive doe harvest and a failing model have decimated the herd.

(Sand Plains 219, 223, 224, 227, 229, 235, 236, or 285)
Hunter satisfaction with deer numbers in the area was over 60% in surveyed areas in 2005. 10 years later our area has dropped to 32%. Its not all wolves and winter. Years of excessive doe harvest and a that consistently overestimates the herd has cut it in half.

(remainder of state) Hunter satisfaction with deer numbers in the area was over 60% in surveyed areas in 2005. 10 years later hunter satisfaction is 1/3 to 1/2 half those percentages. Hey Brooks, typo that needs correcting:

"Years of excessive doe harvest and a (MODEL?) that consistently overestimates the herd has cut it in half."

Got this back from Represenative Mark Anderson

Dear Lee,
Thank you for your message. I could not agree more.

My phone was retarded so I had to send to each legislator one at a time  got it done though.
My I phone did the same today. I don't Think I can send that many people in one email or something.

Keep going team. I just sent mine about 20 minutes ago. I already had a legislator personally respond and ask for an explanation of who may oppose such an audit.

By the end my phone was so hot I was worried it would start on fire. I was surprised I actually got some real responses almost immediately.

Keep up the good work.

I will get mine sent out in the morning. Thanks for the info and the reminder to get this done.

Thank you for your email, Ryan. The drastic decrease in deer population you have noted is concerning. An audit of the DNR deer model sounds very appropriate.
Thank you, again, for contacting me.
Sincerely,
Peggy

Did I read here or somewhere else that there is a hearing coming up at the state capitol soon?? If so, when is it?? I might try to make it down.

Feb 11th is deer day on the hill. Hackbarths Mining and Outdoor Rec committee with DNR present. Gonna be fun. Nobody tell McLovin.

I sent an e-mail. Mentally defeated or not e-mailing is easy.

Let this die for a day or two and then we can bring it back to the top. Would like to see the emails spaced out over a couple weeks or more.

I have not sent mine yet.... I can do it this weekend if desired.

I have an email sitting my drafts ready to go I will wait a few days on sending it.

So this effort is simply to have the dnr do more accurate counting? Or to just increase numbers? I guess in my opinion things aren't that bad, they are reducing doe harvest and in a couple of years numbers will rebound nicely. It actually is probably a good thing to have a dip in population from time to time. Would slow disease and give habitat a chance to rebound. Everyone on here knows that deer are hard on habitat, that is why they have to cage newly planted trees. At least in the areas I hunt the bag limits seemed to line up pretty close with populations so for me the models are good enough. And if you are just concerned about numbers they are already re-evaluating that. But this is just my opinion and do not support it.
