Live from the stand thread

Trying one more time to get my granddaughter on a deer. Last day of youth and extended CWD season here in NW Missouri.

Logan shot a really old doe last night at some private land he has access to. We estimated her @ 5 plus 5 years ago. He is going to send off the jaw bone/teeth to have her aged since we think she is 10 plus. He went back today to make a stand adjustment and was sitting on the ATV with it running and here comes a doe with the # 1 shooter on that place. He hasn't called me back yet, but I think he will be going back to the truck to get his gear and slip back in for a sit tonight.

Ended the day the same way I started, with an unfired rifle. Did see 9 doe this afternoon just couldn’t get shot

Logan saw him, but not in bow range. He is back on the stand this morning.

I've not released an arrow or pulled a trigger on a deer since Mid-October despite 100 hours in the stand, blind or ground. I'd happily take another doe for the freezer. Glad you saw some, as that always brings a little hope!

Not live but opening day of PA rifle was Saturday. Cold and windy I think 25 in the morning with 10-15 mph winds. Learned a valuable lesson to not be lazy and clear shooting lanes. Had a shooter at under 50 yards and was too thick to shoot to where he was. Still had a fun day. Had a little 6 pt chase a doe right by me about 15 yards. Grunted with every step. He was crippled earlier in the year. Not sure if he got hit by a car or what. For a while he could barely get around but he's barely limping now. Saw him on Sunday too still chasing.

Our gun opener here today.
Started 15 degrees out with some light wind. Right off the bat a had a buck walk behind me about ten yards away.
Then a couple does with twins walked by out front about 45 yards, deer were moving around in the woods just off to my left, then a really nice buck in the 130’s pops out about fifty yards right in front of me and walks east.
By 8:30 I quit counting at thirty deer going by in range in front and behind me, four were bucks.
I shot my buck last month so was looking for a big doe with no fawns. Every doe that came by seemed to have twins or triplets or be on my neighbor.
Started seeing deer more bunched up in groups after 9:00 and starting to act a little spooky…had heard some distant shots.
By ten my toes were getting cold enough so I slipped out of the stand.

My youngest son and his fiancée met me over at my house, they had hunted in the hut where she could keep warm at the Big Woods. He said they bumped some deer going in and that was about it for the morning besides a couple fawns.
After lunch I sent them over to where I was this morning, about an hour before dark he texted me that she had gotten a buck.

She made a nice 150 yard shot dropping it in its tracks!

Opening day in Ohio. Small bucks, does, and fawns. I think the neighbors got a lot of the big bucks. None on camera here in the last two weeks.

You gonna have your property timbered? Looks like some massive trees you can sell and you’ll quadruple your bedding in a year.

18 degrees this morning with a brisk fifteen mile an hour wind out of the west.
I tucked into a blow down on north corner east side of woods, sitting on a dove stool.
Was there about fifteen minutes looking south and for whatever reason caught a little movement to the north out of the corner of my eye
Looked and there was a big fat doe standing in the field thirty yards away looking at me.
I shifted to get on her and she bounced away about thirty yards and stopped, then I noticed she was with four or five others
I never took my eyes off her and dropped her at sixty yards one shot. The others scattered to the west. All over in seconds.
They had apparently came a mile and a half across the open ground to me and I was looking in the wrong direction. I had expected the action from that way due to all the movement being to the south yesterday.
It worked out great for a very quick hunt.

It's my uncle's property. He has no interest in timbering unfortunately.

Congrats on the buck your future DIL got and your doe!! Good season there. More to come for any family members?

Thanks Bows, yes my sons are still at it this year and we have been crazy lucky so far filling the freezers. I may shoot one more doe. Everyone in our family loves venison and more every year are starting to deer hunt. I am so glad I got into the habitat thing when I did, between our two farms and two leases it gives us a lot of options for the wind/weather and traffic so we aren’t burning any one spot out to much.
I think for the extended family we have shot 7-8 deer so far.

Lake effect machine shut off a couple of hours ago so I'm sitting with Mrs in her backyard hunting shack after work. Watching flying squirrels run around more than looking for deer. There must be a dozen or so in here with us.

I remember when you first got started with your habitat improvements. You've come a long way - all to the good! Glad you folks are filling freezers. Late season bunnies on the schedule? Your young ones will be fishing again come spring. Lots of good stuff happening at your places. Great work H20.

Very cool !!! Those furry gliders know where the warmth and goodies are. Neat critters to be sharing a shack with.

We didn’t see any deer but it was enjoyable last hour of the day to decompress. The little rodents keep her happy while she’s out there and if she’s enjoying herself what more can I ask for. Plus she’s the only one to put any venison in the freezer so far. lol
