Conspiracy theorys, where do you stand?

Trump is throwing a lot of distractions to make it get ignored and it appears it is working. I have to give him credit though killing two birds with one stone. He is sending national guards in as a distraction form the Epstein files but also finding a way to punish the ones who voted against him, pretty ingenious. So far troops sent to Los Angeles and DC when neither place it seemed necessary, both blue Cities. Now he has suggested Baltimore and New York, both blue cities in a blue States, although Baltimore crime has been decreasing for years and is down 28% this year. A little research would reveal that Jacksonville Florida and Tulsa Oklahoma has had crimes increase and murder rates are above national averages. Do you think National Guards will be sent to Florida, I bet not, in fact I can bet I know where they will be sent. Some would argue that Baltimore should be congratulated instead of embarrassed. This much effort..... the Epstein files are Kryptonite.
How do you figure that D.C. doesn't need more law and order? They too are above the national average in violent crime. That's even just going by their "official" stats, which they have been credibly accused of manipulating.

I’m against conspiracy theories. I think they have a wide variety of negative effects.

I’ll leave it to you to decide what is a conspiracy theory and what isn’t.
It would be more helpful if you would share your definition of conspiracy theory since you are claiming a position.

A conspiracy theory is a belief or explanation that claims certain events or situations are the result of a secret, often unlawful, plot by a group of people—typically powerful individuals, governments, or organizations—working together behind the scenes.

Key aspects usually include:
Secretive Collaboration – It assumes coordinated action by multiple parties, hidden from the public.
Unlawful or Deceptive Goals – The alleged purpose often involves wrongdoing, manipulation, or control.
Contradicts Official Accounts – It typically challenges or rejects mainstream or authoritative explanations.
Difficult to Disprove – Claims may rely on selective evidence, speculation, or the idea that “lack of proof” is itself proof of the cover-up.

In short: it’s a belief that something big is being secretly planned or concealed, usually to the public’s harm or for someone’s gain.

I actually really like how the mayor of D.C. is approaching this. Shes taking the public approach that she is going to take full advantage of the resources that were just made available to her. Not bad.

Thanks, that is helpful. I would have defined it much differently.

I think a lot of people (not saying you did) assume when I mention "conspiracy theory" it's an attack on maga etc.

I hate all of the goofy psudo-newsy looking bs. I got drawn into reading a big post about how the Pa. assasination attempt was a hoax. There was a lot of convenient "facts", a lot of "is it a coincidence", "connect the dots" type nonsense in it. If I was not a very skeptical reader, the post made it sound totally believeable that the incident was all staged. It wasn't. A nutbag shot at the president. He killed a rally goer. Saying that Trumps people planned it does a disservice to the truth and to the country. And feeding the nutbags with more crazy talk doesnt serve free speech or democracy, it corrodes it.

The amount of cops and normal people who have been shot by crazies the last few weeks is insane. In my home state, the cops got called to a house for a naked guy on his lawn. When they got there he shot at them, hit one or both. He set his house on fire and apparently fled on a bicycle. Nutbag shoots shoppers in a Target. Nutbag stabs shoppers at a Walmart. Does the nonsense people are reading online make them crazier? who knows. I work with a guy who was a genuinely fun and happy guy. He "got involved" in what he thinks is politics. It has ruined his life. Mad about everything. Everything is liberal vs. conservative. The "other side" is destroying the country. Life is hard enough without putting yourself through that.

A lot of inconvenient truth in here.

It sure doesn't help that COMMON SENSE is super hard to find anywhere right now. jmo

Common sense doesn't really mean anything. People can rationalize anything. It's never been easier to find info that confirms your biases. Hell, there are entire media empires that cater to particular viewpoints. This isn't even bringing up social media or tailored search algorithms.

Social scientists that have been studying these influences have been warning about the long term negative effects. The problem is that the least informed and the most mis-informed people are often the ones most confident in their beliefs.

The advent of the web changed everything. Too much info, and, too much false info. Hard core conspiracy ppl will ignore many obvious facts and latch onto only 1 thing that supports their narrative on a topic. They go on their rant, eyebrows raise, and others like me start doing a little checking to make sure i'm not that "head in the sand" guy.
For example: I'm good friends with the owner of the company I work for. He's very well off, decently educated, maga, and very successful at everything he does. He's also, what I would classify, a conspiracy theorist. While he doesn't believe the earth is flat (thank god), we have other spirited conversations about topics, like space travel. He doesn't believe we landed on the moon, period. He thinks it all was faked, the pics, video, tv coverage, the whole space program was a complete hollywood/gov't lie.
What's difficult for me is even getting past the first obvious facts that can't be proven wrong. Like, if what he's saying is true, then that would mean there's gotta be 10's of thousands of people on earth that are all keeping the same secret. That's not possible.
At that point, I'm not interested in going down the rabbit hole. I've resigned to believing the truth likely lies somewhere in the middle.

I'm not ashamed to admit that there was a time when I believed something completely counter to robust evidence. My brother in law bought me a book called "Why People Believe Weird Things" by Michael Shermer. It was a super easy read and I cannot recommend it enough. The book spends more time talking about how people end up believing the weird things than actually disproving or debunking them. It was an eye-opening experience for me to see how I got sucked down a rabbit hole and how similar it is for others to do the same.

I think that is the goal. So long as people are mad and in a state of unrest, they cannot focus on what is going on around them. It goes far beyond politics. Consider that 100-150 years ago, people didn't have as many things causing them unrest like they have today:

Politics, sports, health, beauty, addiction, money, kids, crime, immigration, all sources of constant unrest, and you only need one to keep you distracted and distanced from everyone as a person battles their own demon.

I was genuinely puzzled when you mentioned that CDC thing down south. I truly don't watch or read the news. I check a few aggregators, but other than that, I just don't care because I know none of it objective or there to inform. Now I focus on trying to stay out of that unrest. So I don't get involved in keeping up with the Jones, politics (especially politics), and most of those other things. There are some simple rules to live by, and nearly all of those things go away if you just don't participate.

1. Don't listen to anything your TV tells you to do.
2. If it's not God's design, it's gonna be shit. Take a cue from the amish.
3. Nobody is running around working to do you any favors, government or corporation.

If you've been paying attention, it's pretty easy to avoid most of the sources of unrest today. Sometimes I still get worked up, but its less and less by the day. What's going on is obvious enough. If somone hasn't figured it out by now, they won't.

Really? I have that book on the shelf right next to me. I found it extremely disappointing. Maybe I need to read it again, I was just expecting something more profound when I purchased it.

Want to share your definition?
I suppose more broadly rather than much differently would be a more accurate statement. Most of what I see labeled as a conspiracy theory is just an opinion or point of view that is other than a strict belief in the official narrative. I don't believe that a plot to deceive is necessary, nor hidden actions.

Facts are facts, when in the end all of your "conspiracy theories" are proven true do you still call them conspiracy theories? Some might say you are the one spreading conspiracy theories by doing your best to explain away the conspiracy theories.
