Got my target buck tonight on opening day. Couldn't believe he stepped out while it was still light because he's a spooky one. I believe he's 7.5 y/o and I have his sheds from 2 years ago. He did decline from last year. Couldn't send a live from the stand-no cell signal haha.

These are the volunteer beans that grew in my plot absolutely drawing deer in. A few days left of MN muzzle loader season but the 5 year old 8 pointer I'm hunting didn't show up. Plenty of action though, now I've got to wait for my wife to get home and give me a ride home with the side by side. No way I'm getting out of here clean. I'd say conservatively I saw 50 deer tonight, probably 15 bucks. Two pretty nice ones I think were three year olds.
Have a few friends showing up on Sunday to help with doe patrol.

Out chasing a bone head. Gunna need a bit of luck as I had some pheasant hunters walk half of the property. And the just now the adjacent landowner decided it was a good time to start moving some hay.

Today is starting day of flintlock season and the 45th anniversary of my 1st hunt as a licensed hunter. Sitting in my box blind on a cold afternoon in the mid teens... Just passed these 2 little skippers hoping they're big brother or sister comes by.

At times the view from the stand is just that–a view. While we had deer “on camera” throughout the day, we never saw any from the stand. When I closed the door to the blind, I realized it would be nearly 10 months before the stand is visited again. The sunset was appropriate for the day, and I enjoyed I the privilege of having my son, who is a new hunter this year, with me in the blind. Fortunately, this is not our “last hunt” as we will be heading to SW Missouri this weekend for two days of hunting at our Ozark property.

Last hunt of the year—two days and a few sightings, but no shooters. Time now to focus on habitat improvements and thinking about spring and summer projects. I ended the season with two deer in the freezer, and my son harvested his first deer this year. The best part is knowing I was able to mentor several first time hunters, which is part of my habitat plan.

Doe down on the season finale. Caps off a successful 1st deer season for Christopher. This deer acted strange. She didn't totally spook away from us entering the stand. Definitely saw us, ran 100 yards, watched us, bedded down, stood up, shook off, fed for a while, bedded again, fed again, 2 hrs later fed our way where he let her have it with the new 350 Leg. I assumed she was a fawn, but in reality she's a probable yearling with a 5.5" eye to nostril. We are in a cwd section for a number of years now. She seems a normal, healthy weight. Appears to have some infection in the front half of her body but nothing drastic observed yet, prior to skinning. Her stomach hair was thin and doesn't look right. Has anyone ever seen a non-fawn doe act like that? Why was she alone and seemingly unafraid? We don't have to have the meat, but definitely want it! How do you guys treat infections? Don't want to get my kids sick.

If it were me - I'd take it to a lab that can test it for anything that might be harmful to your family if eaten. Why take any chances??
Was the meat and fat normal looking and smelling? If CWD testing is available, I'd probably get it tested.
If the meat and fat looked or smelled bad or even different, I'd probably throw it away since it isn't worth getting sick over. It looks pretty nice in those pictures though, so I don't think it was close to death or anything.

I decided to not eat the deer. All 6 of us enjoy eating them and I'd like to keep it that way. She had a yellow tint to her abdomen and front ribs had off colored meat compared to back ribs. We have 2 in the freezer, but we'll have to pace ourselves 'til next fall. Not sure what happened to the deer to give it troubles, but she had something going on. Flipped over her other side looked the same as this. Coupled with the odd behavior, seemed the smart idea.
