Live from the stand thread

That’s was interesting… Was hunting some woods that leads out to a neighbors cornfield that just got cut this week. Five does work by me at different times to feed out that cornfield. A little before dark they came running back by me with their tails up. Well right behind them was 2 coyotes. Shot one and it was raising hell as it died about 20 seconds later. The other coyote did not take kindly to this. It kept going back and forth and yipping along the road I have to take to get out. I stood up and waved my arms so it would see me…that only pissed it off! It’s started growling which lead into a howling which called another yote in! It’s dark, I have no headlamp and they are on my path. Eventually I just had to get down with that at 25 yards and hope like hell they didn’t follow me as I bushwhacked through some nasty stuff back to the bike. Never seen one that “aggressive” before. Would have shot it too but it would have left me with one broadhead for the weekend
I know coyotes arent gonna attack, but they always raise the hair on the back of my neck when I am walking out alone at night. At least I keep telling myself they wont attack.

I'm a public land hunter as I only own 5 acres, and the deer almost never visit my plot during daylight. But this guy has been showing in front of my camera just a few minutes after closing this last week.

So I sat here at home tonight. About 20 minutes before close, I spotted one of his buddies crossing the marsh behind me. I reached out to grab my crossbow off it's hanger, thinking he couldn't see me as he was broadside. Then I here snorts coming from another deer. I can barely see through the leaves and branches behind me, but sure enough, the big guy was staring right at me. After a couple more snorts, and about 5 minutes of staring, they hopped off in the other direction. Doubt I'll get another chance.

Forgot to take a pic from the first day. This is from Saturday evening at a family friend's property. He timbered last year and it's getting fairly thick already with the tree tops and growth. It has long been just a pass through area. I'm really excited for this stand. It's at the intersection of two logging roads one of which runs parallel and down wind to where I think doe will bed now. It's already pretty scraped up. Only saw a bunch of doe so far though. Had two little ones run underneath me. Another still with a few spots.

Wow! @g squared 23 is a big buck killer! 2 years in a row with deer that would be bucks of a lifetime for me.

Edit: Taxidermist just texted me and he rough scored it at 186, and he says he’s normally within an inch or two

Nice buck! Are they planting beans on public land in your state? That’s a pretty good deal for the public land owner!

Not to speak for him but yeah I see it a pretty good bit where I’m at. The problem is it can be like a moth to a flame for hunters so it’s best to capitalize early in the season.

They do and they’ve been harvesting them like mad up until today with the rain. This field was a week or two behind the rest

Holy *^%(* g squared 23 that is a dandy!! Killing him on public ground adds another 20" to him in my mind.

In Nebraska and Kansas it is common for farmable Ag ground on public land to be planted to crops. The farmers lease the land, and often times are required to leave a small portion in the field unharvested.

Congrats bud! Very nice buck indeed!!

Looks like you shot on Public land and he expired in a Soy Bean field? I think those are Soy Beans anyway, never grew any lol

Edit: I read the rest of the comments so no need to reply about the Beans.

I’m in my blind for a crossbow hunt this evening and the 2 day ML season opens in the morning. Will hunt both. Not as confident as my other hunt. My target not on camera last time I checked, but excited anyway.

I have turkeys in range, and crossbow Turkey season is in. As much as I would like to get one, I won’t ruin a deer hunt for a Turkey. At least it makes me feel like I had a silent entry.

I'm bringing my shotgun out tomorrow in hopes a getting a turkey or two.

Good luck. I had these at 10 yards. Counted 28. We can take 4 with crossbow in fall but only one Tom.

I shoot them all the time while deer hunting. but you do have to get down and move them off the field. I left one once and the deer did not like it....
