You place is looking good. You have some good looking bucks this year.

Looks like they are liking the improvements, keep it up and good luck!

That buck is toying with my emotions, out in broad daylight when it's 85 degrees.

Spent yesterday planting, screening, and caging apple trees that Chuck had grown in root pouches over the summer. All these are on b 118 except this dolgo on mm111, which btw was Chucks first attempt at grafting. Greyphase, that dolgo came from you. I'm looking forward to crabapple jelly in the future from it.20161207_130600.jpeg

Good job Merle. I've been wanting to set a few trees but got so cold now, I'm keeping my rear end inside and waiting for a better time....

I still have my apples to plant out too, but since I have them in my garden and not in pots I can plant them when I'm ready. I didn't want Chuck' s to freeze solid in the pots so we had to power plant. I hope to get a chance for a bow hunt this week. We've not even shot at one this year!

Somehow missed this post. You won't be disappointed in that dolgo crabapple jelly. Opps got a little drool on my keyboard just thinking about it. :D

Went to the farm today and planted a few more of the apples I had growing at the house, but the main project was direct seeding ACCF chestnuts.
I'm trying out a hybrid version of what the AFC does with milk jugs and coke bottles.20170124_132039.jpeg

I cut out the bottom then made 4 slits about 4 inches long from the bottom.
I buried the jugs that deep then filled them with dirt and back filled around it.
Then a chestnut was dropped in the center and covered with a half inch or so of dirt.20170124_132117.jpeg

I taped the top back up and put a Styrofoam cup with a small hole I'd made in it over that.
Put a stake next to it and taped that up good. 20170124_132422.jpeg

Finally, I put a small wire cage over the whole thing.
I'll plant more of these next week providing nothing destroys any of these.
Miss Lucille sent 40 miles chestnuts this fall and I hope to get better growth from the direct seeded nuts.20170124_145931.jpeg

Looking good! What's your plans just remove the bottle and leave them caged?

For the first year I'll leave the bottle.
When they start growing, I'll cut the bottom out of the Styrofoam cup, turn it over, and set it down in the bottle to protect the young seedling from the edges.
The bottle should protect against voles, mice, etc. At least that's my hope.
