A few habitat pics I thought you might enjoy

Looks like you got a head start on spring and you even found some more hazelnuts for me to dig:emoji_thumbsup:

Yep, and these bushes are easier to get to than the last ones....

Great looking property you have Native !! That turkey lane looks to do the job getting them a clear path to the plots. Your food plots are amazing for this time of year. Deer and turks have to be liking them !!

I'm hoping our winter doesn't get too ugly up here. Powdery snow's OK, wet snow, ice & freezing rain break limbs. We still have late archery / muzzleloader season to go here. After those, I hope to be working at camp to get a jump on spring too. You're ahead of the game already. Nice work.

We had some recent icing that stopped just short of being really bad. I would say maybe 1/4 inch of ice. But, it warmed up before it got worse.

Best wishes to you Bows on the rest of the year, and wishing you a very Merry Christmas.

Right back at ya, Native !!! Merry Christmas to you and your family. Taxi man will have a couple presents for you and your son in a short while - :emoji_man_dancing:

I've been getting an awesome amount of work done here lately. The weather was horrible for a while but has been cooperating better now.

My trapper got started a couple of days ago. He got this one and another one about 50 yards away today. Good to get them cleaned out before time for fawning.

My son come in with a new handgun the other day...LOL...I took a picture of his next to my Kimber 380.

This is no guarantee of a great Hazelnut crop, but it is a good sign to see all of these catkins.

I'm working every chance I get in the oak planting. I have ignored one area of it for years and a few sweetgums need to be whacked.

Tree on the left is a red oak I planted. Tree on the right is a volunteer sweetgum. You can guess what happened.

Vines aren't generally a problem for me, but I found this today. Can't believe how it cut into this oak. It got cut and gly treated.

This shows why you need to treat sweetgum stumps. I cut this a few years ago and didn't treat it.

A nice red oak. No sweetgum gonna catch this one.

The easiest to identify oak in the winter is the Cherrybark Oak. When young, they resemble a Pin Oak somewhat, but the bark looks like a wild cherry tree.

That's about it guys. I'm getting a lot of work done and loving life! Best Wishes!

Don’t get barrel envy :emoji_stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Looking good!
I have a friend who films hunts getting ready to film some coyote hunts at my place now..
He’s the only one I let on the place anymore. Keeps after the Yotes now and he’ll be back to film some turkeys buying it in the spring. Both are vermin in my book!

Everthing is looking good Native! Your getting a great start on your spring work.
My oldest hazelnuts were loaded with catkins and the birds have eaten about all of them off in the last month.

That handgun looks to be the center of a Clint Eastwood movie !! :emoji_fearful:

I like your taste in chainsaws. Is sweet gum a hard wood ?? We don't have any here - just wondering if it's good for firewood. Those round, spike-y seed pods would make a great torture item. Your oaks look good.

Is Dad polishing up his yote scope ?? Couple lead-sponges running in that night pic !! Give him a "HELLO" for me.

Bows, sweetgum is technically a hardwood. You can burn it, but it really isn't great firewood. It grows like a weed in slightly wet places and can easily take over a place, because its a tall climax tree. It also just covers the ground with multiple sprouts that try to choke everything else out. They get as tall as white oaks and grow twice as fast.

Dad just turned 84 a few days ago. He has his rifles ready. He wants to help mow the NWSGs this year and plans on hunting the yotes for the next few days following. Thanks and I will pass along your greetings!

Happy B-day to your Dad !! Many more.

I've seen sweet gum trees in Pa. before - but none anywhere near my camp. Mostly used as street trees or around parking lots here. I've never sawed any, but they look good color-wise in the fall. That's the extent of my interaction with sweet gum.

Then you are a lucky man! Sweet gums SUCK!

My uncle is trying to finish my new tower blind up at the creek bluff property this week, and my attention is now turning back to my other property. Some of the pics below have been posted in other threads but some are new.

My fall planted food plots are looking to suit me. You can't see the chicory really well yet in these pictures, but it is there and thriving. Also, the medium red clover is coming on nicely.

I direct seeded a bunch of chinkapins last fall. They are coming up great.

All of those hazelnut bushes I dug up and transplanted back in the winter are living and looking good.

Still too early to tell anything but these boys look like possibilities. Will be watching:

Looks good, congrats on the turkey. Are they using the clover?

Scott, the deer are really hammering the clover. At the place where the plot is located, I don't get many turkeys as a general rule, because a tall native grass field separates where they roost from the plot.

Native, your place always looks great. I'm envious of your growing season. With all the positives for your area what are the biggest challenges for your deer herd?

I see your using a DR, how do you like it? I'm looking for a used walk behind and DR's seem to be popular and available.

Thank you Freeborn. I think the biggest challenge to growing mature bucks here is the lack of large blocks of cover and fairly heavy hunting pressure. Some neighbors have bought in to not shooting young bucks, and that is helping, but some haven't, and it is still a challenge. Last years was a great year for us, but we have up and down years just like everyone else.

That DR Mower is something it would be hard for me to live without. It is super handy for working in my tree planting in tight places where a tractor and bushhog is awkward or not possible. I find myself using it for many, many tasks. In the winter when the ground is too wet for anything else, I can zip right through the mud with it and do lots of early work. Their customer service is second to none. I finally had to do some work on mine this year, and the parts were super easy to get and came quickly.

PS: I'm looking at adding another new piece of equipment soon. I mow several trails, a yard and around some fruit and nut trees at my farm. Right now I'm using a Huskvarna tractor type mower, which does okay, but I'm looking at replacing it with a Grasshopper Zero Turn. Tried one out over there this week and convinced myself it will be worthwhile for me. I will bring the Huskvarna home and use it in my yard there. The Grasshopper will adjust to 5 inches high, and I can see myself using it occasionally to mow a plot and save me some time by not having to go get my tractor and bushhog.

I wish you were my neighbor.

I’d talk you into planting all kinds of stuff while I wasn’t there...

Some awesome pictures. I love any pictures with terrain. I only frequent flat ground.

I have a swisher walk behind 24". It works great for mowing sidewalks, and the deer really use them on my land. I just make one pass around 4th of July and they keep it open the rest of the time. Mow some 4 wheeler trailer with it too. I've cut a lot of shit with mine. Think I paid $700 for it. IMG_0387.JPGIMG_0947.JPGIMG_0948.JPG
