Pheasant habitat

That’s fun to see! I really didn’t know much about crabapples until this site. Now, I have 25 to plant this spring 😀

What types of crabs are you planting for pheasents?

A couple rows of mature red splendor crabapples could keep a flock of pheasants and grouse well fed in rough winters for decades.

That looks like something that would like to live on my property, summer after this.

Red splendor. Also have some high bush cranberry and black chokeberry coming my way.

Where did you buy the red splendor?

I have about 25 RSC that I have planted. Most were planted in 2022 and a few more planted in 2024. I put them in 5 foot tubes and have been giving them a little shot of fertilizer every year. They were growing very very fast. This past summer I had a few of them grew so tall and so fast that central leader broke. I'm not 100% sure if they were browsed or if the wind snapped them off. I have them in full sun with weed mats and mulch. Planted specifically for grouse food. I think the broken ones will be just fine.

On my WI place the bears to a number on all of my apple trees, including red splendor crabapples. I just trim off the mangled branch and let the tree correct itself over time.

During Wisconsin's gun deer season a couple weeks ago I saw a pair of grouse feeding in a red splendor crabapple I planted a decade ago specifically to feed grouse. It is pretty cool to see a plan work out like it is supposed to.

Anyone know of a nursey that ships bareroot Red Splendor crabs.

I buy all of mine in MN from the local county sales. Just about every county around me in MN sells bundles of RSC, but all of them are pick up only. Bundles of 10 are about $20. Bundles of 25 are about $40-55 depending on the county. Perhaps you have a county sale around you somewhere???? Never seem to run across them all that much online. Ours are almost always advertised as 18-24" bareroots. If you cant find them online check your county and the surrounding ones.

I’ve bought bundles of red splendors from my county and 5 years ago they were nice sized back then, but recently they were way too tiny.

I’ve ordered them recently from yellow River nursery and they are really nice sized trees, so that’s where I’ve ordered them from again this year. If you pot them in the spring and baby them they will be about 6’ tall the next year

No, they ship them as well. I don’t recall what the shipping charge is, but it isn’t too bad. I think the minimum tree order is around 20 trees if I remember right.

Dang it, now I may need to buy a few in case some that I planted this winter die. Well, if they don't die I'll just have to find some spots.

I bought both red splendor seedlings and dolgo seedlings last year from yellow River and they were quality trees. I’ve ordered them again this year again.

Dolgo seedlings are awesome for deer and redsplendors are great for grouse/pheasants.

I sure wish I would have known they ship. Been checking out their website since you mentioned getting dolgo from them last year, but I was under the assumption it was pickup only. They have everything I want to plant for 2025. Now some of the bigger stuff I was looking for is already sold out. I'm gonna put an order in as soon as I can get ahold of them.

I’ve been very impressed with their dolgo and red splendor seedling apple trees.
