Pheasant habitat

Dolgo seedlings are awesome for deer and redsplendors are great for grouse/pheasants.

I’m gonna pretend you also said Siberians are good for grouse. I ordered half and half, and also got some flower plugs I’ve been looking for.

I didn’t know until after I hit the button they don’t ship. Lucky for me I go that way for work and can pick them up.

Just got back in from a short hunt. Here’s a few pics of habitat we have planted …

Spruce, cedar, dogwood/willow next to cattails in this spot.

That's good stuff on so many levels. I really like the looks of it too. Love the different colorful layers.

Yellow River nursery in Wisconsin. $4.15 each

Went and bought 35 Red Splendor crabs. Now I have to scout out places to plant. Have several areas that will be good. Would like to find some south facing higher spots on the edge of our marsh plant some. Will probably plant in groupings of 3-5.

adirondack would make a great crab for grouse/pheasants. I hunt grouse mostly now. Find them up in birch trees eating the buds catkins or whatevers up there. Short dense shrubs are great too. Almost always guaranteed to find them in a juniper bush. Would work better than red cedars.

Here's what nys nursery sels as a ruffed grouse packet.

American hazelnut, red osier dogwood, pussy willow, white spruce, witch hazel,
winged sumac

Always liked hunting the hens more than the roosters. Seemed to be a tougher to get bird.

I'm glad you mentioned the hazelnuts for pheasant. We got 250 hybrid hazelnuts from a nearby CD district for free last summer. Got them planted and tubed in our 47ac Pheas/pollinator planting. Used them to break up what used to be a cool season grass field.

bwoods11 has got the picture. Those 1/4 acre or so blobs of thick predator and then thermal cover from the spruces. Sometimes you cant shake em loose out of those spruce trees, but it's nice some of them are atleast staying on the property.

I remember trying to keep my dog working a field or brush line. Smart little sucker remembers the place and know where the birds are in those blobs. She'd go right to them flush a few out. Could of shot them, but wanted a fun afternoon of hunting. She'd look back at me like an idiot for not taking a shot. Used to pop off the gun here n there while flushing so she would get cranky at me....
