We expect more better pics tomorrow and the explanation of just how you got that thing in the truck....

Congrats to you son. And now the rest of your deer are safe!

Looks good to me. No gons of white hair. Where did it feel like you hit?
Left - right should be good. Could be high or low. Perfect broadside standing still.

I'd say go get it... :)

But time is always your friend. Did you back right off? Or have you looked a bit?

Found arroow, found couple drops of bright blood 10-15 yards away, backed out. Did all quietly in food plot without pushing at all. I'm a rifle guy, this is pretty new to me.

I bet that deer is piled up. Broadheads are mean when they hit the boiler room. And the boiler room is pretty big.
If right left was good, you're good. To high and they live, but that's a small spot. Same with to low.

Thanks guys. I will get some better pictures tomorrow morning.

Bill, it truly was difficult for the two of us to get him in the truck. I found a low spot where the tail gate was down a little and we got him in. We drove him to dad's place, and he lifted him with the tractor and I field dressed him.

Here is the hunting story: The morning hunt was pretty much uneventful. We did see two young bucks and a few does, but not really much to talk about. We came out mid day for a break and went back in around 2:00 PM. The wind started picking up and we had a constant 15 mph wind with gusts up to 25. I told my son that some wind was good, but those gusts didn't appeal to me much. Finally it settled a little and about an hour or so before dark, deer started coming out at different places.

We saw three young bucks and one of them was really beautiful. He will be a dandy if he makes it two more years. He was working a scrape and licking branch that I didn't even know was there. Finally, about 20 minutes before dark I saw commotion break loose in some tall grass. Two does come busting through like bats out of Hades. Right behind them was this big sucker. He looked like a tank busting through the grass. He came by us two times a little past 100 yards in a plot, but was moving so fast we couldn't even get the gun in place to shoot.

Finally everything just died down and all we saw was a few deer feeding at different places in my mini plots that are scattered about. Then suddenly here he came out of the tall grass about 120 yards away, walking the edge of one of my plots toward a mock scrape I made last week. He was broad side to us and just walking slowly. My son got the new muzzleloader up, got on him and dropped him in his tracks.

This was a special hunt for us. His birthday is in 3 days, and the first thing I said when he pulled the trigger was "happy birthday. I'm going to mount that deer for your birthday present this year." Some good father and son bonding right there for sure.

10000% deer is dead. i will say congrats now.

Awesome deer Native. He’s a tank.

Congrats Native!

Native, what a giant.

Apparently your son shoots a lot like your Dad based on that hit....

Bill, he was using that new smokeless ML that I just got back in the spring. He commented to me how he liked shooting it better than any of our other rifles. He may have hit just a tad high, but pretty much where it needed to be. When that 275 grain, 45 caliber slug hit, I've never seen one go down so fast.

Great job, Native Hunter. That's exciting. Great looking deer.

Congrats to you & your son !! He's a real slab for sure. Nothing quite like the father / son hunting experience. He'll make a heck-of-a wall mount.

Your story about the gusty wind just goes to show ……….... you never know. The big ones can show up any time in any weather condition. Your turn now ???

Thank you Bows. Yes, I'm leaving for the stand in 10 minutes. This will be my last chance before November gun season. I have one deer on my heart, and won't settle for any others. I think you know which one I'm talking about.

It is ironic. This 8 point my son got was the most wary one of the bunch per trail cameras. I expected us to get a shot at the others but not him. I guess that is why we call it "hunting." I'm rested up and ready for another one!

Good luck! Hopefully that dude full of stickers does indeed poke his nose out for you....

200 + lb. porcupine. ( The one you're waiting on. ) I hope you get him - now or in gun season.

Hunting in the mountains again. A team of four guys out most of the day. I was on top of the ridge, and the other guys were a bit lower down the slope. I saw a few deer, but they saw me first. One guy got a 1.5 year old doe. Was foggy and rainy, but overall a good day.

First hunt of the season. Beautiful 24 degrees. A few deer moving. Bucks are starting to get edgy. They are scraping and licking every branch they can find.

Never recovered the buck I shot Saturday afternoon. Didn't hunt again as I spent all day Sunday looking for him. Hope it was a non fatal hit and he is live and well on his feet somewhere.
