I’m in the north 20 blind, and my son is in the south blind, with a 22 mile per hour east wind, and 15 inches of snow in the forecast. We are on the front end of the blizzard. I am testing the theory that deer move before major snow events.

We’re in near white out conditions now. I have not experienced this since my days in northern Minnesota.

On the bright side, I saw a threatened species of hawk just a few feet from the blind.IMG_5972.png

That's pretty neat. Those started coming back in Ohio some years ago. I haven't seen many, but at least more than zero like when I was young.

But holy jeez the population of red shoulder hawks has exploded recently. I feel we should maybe get a season or two to thin them out a bit.

In MN I've seen a few events like that and when the snow/wind clears and the high pressure and sun comes out, every deer will be on their feet.

Very rarely do I sit pre-front because it just isn't ever very good from my observations.

Killed my biggest buck in the period right "after the snow" event like you said, Brian. As soon as the snow quit & the sun came out, deer were moving everywhere. Shot the buck as he followed a line of 9 does moving onto a sunny slope. I've hunted in blinding snow, and heavy sleet storms - never saw a thing move. Pouring rain - didn't faze the deer at all, IME.

Good luck with any of your sits, 356 - regardless of the weather.

Last sit before my son returns to his home is Kansas. We’ve seen bucks moving on camera despite the blizzard. 12” of snow so far. Glad to be in an enclosed blind. 17 degrees with a steady 22 mph NE wind.

We got it bad today too. Over a foot for sure, but the drifts make it hard to know. 2’ plus in front of the door. Last day of doe season here. First time not filling a tag in many years. Just had a blue jay fly into the back window looking for shelter I think. Lots of cleanup tomorrow.

Happened upon another dead one today. That's ten on the year and we haven't even looked yet. Last seen in velvet, but he did have the velvet stripped prior to death. Probably a nice 2 yr old.

I'm afraid to look but will next time I'm out if there isn't snow on the ground.

Any idea what they're dying from?
EHD. Bad drought this summer made for the perfect storm. At least at my farm. They we dropping from mid July through September.

With the winter storm brought 15 inches of snow, and the road to the main highway is not yet plowed and several drifts are over 3 feet. My son was not able to return home yesterday because the state of Kansas closed all highways in Northeast Missouri. So, we are taking advantage of the opportunity to get one more sit in before the end of muzzleloader season. Once again, I’m in the north stand and my son is in the south stand. It is 0° with a nice northwest wind, but it is crystal clear.

Seen about 10 so far with an hour to go. I’m in a tree in my IWOM.

I was not expecting to be back in the stand, but my target Buck showed up on camera, so I did some tracking and found a Cervid Super Highway going into a small bedding area. I am set up at a location that may provide an opportunity if they come out to browse in the CRP field in shooting light.

Is that a Heater Body suit?

IWOM, very similar concept, you’re essentially sitting in a sleeping bag. Was a reasonably comfortable evening at 25° and a light northwest wind.

I use one when I am in northern Alberta Canada. Have sat in temps down to 4-5 F. They are definitely the best approach for really cold temps and quick access for your bow or rifle.
