Live from the stand thread

Some mule deer skippers inspected the job site this morning.

Opening youth season here in Missouri. I am out with our granddaughter. Bumped two when coming into the blind and had a doe at too far a distance. Heading out again this afternoon. The hot coco helped take the edge off the brisk morning.

1 really good buck chasing a doe. 50 yards as close as he came
6 on the field at dark

Pretty well wide open here. 8-9 bucks today. Two mature. One olllddd buck. I grunted him to 25 but couldn’t use my tag this early. Even though he has to be 8 I bet Gray face huge body. Another real pretty 140 9 pt that I pray makes it. Heard tons of grunting, buck roar, snort wheeze. Makes it tough to go home! IMG_5868.jpeg

Saw a doe and a decent buck this morning. He was just cruising.
The last couple of times hunting in the evening out of my ladder stand I’ve been seeing deer in the open woods to the north about 150 yds away. There’s really no where to hang a stand there without being in the wide open. So tonight I put on my ghillie suit and hunkered down near one of the bigger trees.
It was an exciting afternoon. I had 15 turkeys feeding within 20’ all around me, a little broken off buck less than 10’ watched a spike run some does past me and finished the night off with another spike and a big 4pt less than 25yds having a difference of opinion on who was the meaner one.
The only downside was when I got back to the house my wife who can see the grapevine thicket where my ladder is from her blind said a giant buck walked out of the grapes about an hour before dark. It was the only thing she saw tonight.

Didn't see a single deer all day
We didn’t see a thing last night, and I’ve had no deer on camera in the past 12 hours (which is very, very rare). It’s the crazy season, for sure. We’ll be out again mid-morning.

My granddaughter and I enjoyed a fun hunt on the second (and last) day of the early youth season. Despite not getting a shot in, we had the thrill of a 2 1/2 year old appearing at 50 yards. As we readied for a shot he ran under the blind and caught our scent. We later saw the same deer 1 minute past shooting light. It was a fun day despite no venison for the table and freezer.

Back at it. Giving the farm a break. On a small permission piece. No intel but looks like a thick honeysuckle hole a buck may lay up in during the rut. Hasn't been hunted in a few years so who knows. One small scarpe on the way in. Stones throw from his back yard. Closest I've ever hunted to a dwelling. Willing to try anything at this point.

Edit. Right on que neighbor shows up to disk the adjacent corn field. Comical at this point. Have seen it all this season

Nevermind that. He is tilling the dam alfalfa field I'm looking over. FFS

That's alfalfa? Did you guys get a hard or prolonged frost? We've had a few frosts here but the alfalfa is still green.

Spoke with the property owner tonight after I left. Turns out he sprayed it 2 weeks ago to rotate to corn next year. There were a few skips I was holding on hope to. Zero deer tonight. Womp womp.

Tried something different today. Been seeing bucks queuing in on two resident does.

So I used the plastic totes and trees and terrain to approach the alfalfa field.

Three whitetail bucks were feeding where the does usually feed.

Mule deer does were everywhere! I think it gave the white tails a false sense of security.

If you move slow, and don’t crowd them the mule deer rarely spook.

I had two or three walk past me at 20 yards.

Finally the bigger of the bucks meandered 70 yards from me. I had a backstop, no fence to shoot through……and no cattle down range.

The 220 savage got her done!

Image 1047 is where I shot.

The rest show how I approached the area.

It’s 2:50 am on nov 8th….ladies do you know where your husbands are.

Headed to the farm!

I will be headed out around noon today for a week. Tail end of next week looks like better weather for me.

Using a decoy for the first time. Pulled in 4 does, and could've shot two of them. They were very cautious the way i have it position they couldn't wind it. Hunting a few yards from my cabin. Definitely a good north east wind spot. I dislike hunting so close to the cabin,Hopefully a cruising buck spots it and come on in.
