Live from the stand thread

Son dumped one 20 minutes ago. I’m stuck at the stove so my brother went to help him.

Luckiest kid I’ve ever seen. Took me 3 weeks. Took him 3 hunts….

Everyone tells me I’m lucky every year. How many more kills before it isn’t lucky. Maybe he learned from his old man and he is just that good.

Think you’re right. He checked the wind and picked the spot. Got skunked this AM and still went back.

Windy cold front blew through. Still a bit breezy but 20 degrees cooler than yesterday's high.

We have a stand literally 35 yards from the road. You can wave to cars going by. But the deer cross there, so…..we put up with the traffic.
We have a stand on a side bank that is 25 yards above a dirt township road...its so thick you cant see the stand that faces uphill...also makes it easy to get the plate numbers of the road hunters too....

What would you do?

About 900 am this morning I hear a close shot(100 yards) it had to be right on my property line. Then a few minutes later a small buck jogs through my food plot, tail down from that direction. He looked as though he was limping a bit. He continued on through my food plot and out the other side. I sat until 10, and I went and looked, and I found 2 small drops of blood on one leaf, that was all I saw, and it was pure dark blood. I didnt look very far, just where he exited the plot nearest me, because that was where I knew he ran. I didn’t want to scent up the plot, or my land for someone else’s small buck so I went back to camp, jumped in my truck and figured I would ask them about it. No one is there. No vehicles, or tracks. Should I go look for the deer after dark? If I find it, who do I give it to? I don’t want to burn my tag on a small buck. Do I just leave it? Let it go to waist?

Maybe a road hunter? Maybe across the road, but no one there was hunting either. The longer I think about it, the more I want to go look for it so it doesn’t go to waist. I figured I would at least drive back down that way and see if anyone was out hunting yet.
How did this one turn out?

Sigh, archery season over. Now a week break for bear season before rifle season on Saturday.

it's a sad time of year when everyone around the country (seemingly) is shooting nice bucks and we here in PA are left to go to work and wait a whole 4 more days....

I asked them if they shot at a buck that morning, and he said, yes but they missed, I told him I saw blood in my food plot, and told him the direction it went to. I also told him, he looked injured, tail down, and was kinda jogging, and not running. I went and looked for it after dark, and found it, gutted it, and I hung it up. I went back over there Sunday morning to tell them, no one was there, and no one was there Monday, so I burned my tag on it. No biggie. I can still bow hunt.

I respect that. The first deer I ever shot I came across a small one with a blown out front leg. I shot it and tagged it and was happy I had the meat. Would rather not waste a resource due to someone else being unethical. Good on you man.

Was it gut or liver shot? How far did the deer go from where they shot it to where you found it? That's really good that you followed up on their bad shot and found the deer.

I doubt we'll ever be able to bowhunt bear week. But I remember not being able to hunt in November at all. Then they extended into the first two weeks of November but you could only shoot doe. Now last year they added the 3rd week of November and 3 Sundays (Only 1 archery). If they would just allow hunting on all Sundays I'd be a happy camper. Hell we can even buy a beer on a Sunday at a gas station now. Anything is possible. haha

Finally saw a deer, hunting a power line opening on public. She was quartering to me, looking right at me, so I didn't wait to see if she had others with her. Shot her right in front of the shoulder and she didn't even make it across the opening(30 yards). Waited a couple minutes and started walking to her. Got about half way and heard all kinds of crashing, something running away from where she came out of the woods. Wish I'd waited a little longer. Happy to get one in the books though.
