The recruiting day for women and girls was successful. About 30 female perticipants, and one girl shot a small stag. The journalist took some photos and wrote an article about it and we we featured in one of the local papers. I will be doing some more recruiting hunts this fall without my rifle, just mentoring new hunters. So far it has been really rewarding.

I miss hunting in Hemlocks. haven't sat among them in years.
This pic brings back a lot of great memories. not of big deer, but of big dreams....

I am blessed to have lots of hemlocks. Most of my stands are in them. The branches weep down and give you perfect cover. I have a swath of hemlocks that is probably a mile long by couple hundred yards wide.

Half of one of our properties is Tamarack, planted in 1960s according to historical aerial photos. Great cover, but a pain when the needles start to drop. Beautiful yellows, covering everything.
The opener was slow for me, but I didn't expect much with temperatures being in the 70s. It's raining today - good time to build a Spey rod that I promised my guide in Alaska as part of his tip. RB Meiser blank...sweet stick.

Those some of the last few survivors on my property. I need to take pics of behind that stand. It's the neighbors property where the hemlocks haven't been removed. Unfortunately you can see 100 yds because the bottom 20-30 feet of the branches are all dead. The younger trees like those in the pic appear to be much healthier. Hopefully they'll make a comeback.

Saw a spike opening day about 8am then nothing. Soon saw a fork ends one of our hit listers but 70 yards out around the same time. Dad had a spike and buddy only a coon. The evening was so hot only my son saw a yearling doe but 13 turkeys however the wasps found him about the sand time. Sat morning dad had a spike and buddy had a spike and a 3ptr early. Rain that afternoon so we called it at 10 and did a little work. Temps sucked but I love sitting in a stand.

Isn’t that the truth. First time, I forget all the stuff I should have.
