Live from the stand thread

Last week was our first gun season hunted every day, day one started out with cold hard rain turning to snow...the new deer hut was nice and cozy saw two deer all day.
Second day was very windy and cold with snow...I'm starting to really like the deer hut.

The rest of the week I was mostly in a tree stand, saw a lot of deer but not quite what I was after..also lots of "other" wildlife up close. Birds especially woodpeckers at least four species, lots of fat fox squirrels and red jimmies along with bunnies fox and eagles. Spent a lot of time on both properties enjoyed every minute, still have second gun and muzzle loader to try and make it happen.

A few pics from last week

Should have shot the cat.
No butchering needed. Just a ditch.
I say that in jest. I like wild cats.
Yotes=Ditch.

Finally getting around to posting a video of a bobcat winding me. I didn't realize they had a good nose.

We have more bobcats this year on our farm than coyotes. Here is a young one that was traveling with a friend that I shot during firearm season.

Also, a bigger one picked up on a camera yesterday.

Rather be in a stand.
But have to take advantage of this weather before it changes and get some alfalfa in the ground.
Not sure I've ever seen a fall this nice. Yesterday was 40, 7 years ago it was -26, ha.

Hey TbT, I saw on the ag forum where a guy in Wisc planted a few acres of soybeans today. Says he expects to see them in early May.

Hope it was only a 20, sounds like risky biz to me. Way to much room for seed rot in my opinion.

But who knows, never tried a dormant bean seeding before. Guess why not, I'm always open to learning something new, just not at my expense, haha.

Haha, same here. I think he said it was a 3. Not out much. In the name of science kinda deal. What's your plans for the alfalfa? Do you guys sell hay?

Dormant seeding at 15#/A with 5#/A orchardgrass. Mostly reseeding all the low drown outs we had over the last years flooding. Most ends up as feed. Wish I could give you more, but I'm just the hired gun to plant it this go round.

That's interesting, I've never heard of dormant seeding alfalfa. Around here it's always early spring or August for alfalfa seeding. Is there any risk of it germinating too early in the spring and being killed by frost?

That is the one major risk.

Have had good success with dormant seeding into covers due to the residue keeping the soil cooler longer in the spring. But this was worked to a pulp and rolled. With how wet we have been the past few years had to get it in when we could.

Like to plant in Aug when I can, but it to is a roll of the dice here, usually about the time the rain shuts off.

My boy hunted all of gun season and was able to harvest a nice buck the last evening of our muzzleloader season. We let a lot of does and smaller bucks walk. We had 25 or so late season deer with 100 yards and we had 2 kids in the blind. Heart was beating way harder than almost any other deer I have shot to date. He made a perfect 90 yard shot with my old smokeless savage. He is 2 for 2 this year.

Damn, nice buck kid. Makes me envious

One last rodeo for the year.
Had 2 nice whitetails I would of liked to chase this morning but dont think I could of made it past the 40 or so does, to boot its a little to calm.
Will try again in the morning and hope the change in weather breaks the groups up a bit. Have time, dont feel like blowing it up on the first day.
20201217_084110.jpgHeaded to different piece to try an ambush one in a treestand.

Been getting skirted last few times out, so thought I'd switch it up. Sat on the ground behind some pines. Worked pretty good until the wind switched unexpectedly. Then not so much. But so it goes.

While I was at work, the boy went out and saw 12 doe. Didn't take a shot even though they were within 15 yards. He said he was buck hunting, I said we need more meat in the freezer. Try again this weekend

He is. He has let a ton of doe and little bucks walk this year. It's the first year he has hunted all by himself. Took a turkey at 25 yards with his bow. But the freezer shelves are looking bare, lol
