Is fires in crop fields common? I've never heard of it around these parts. Started by harvesting equipment?

In normal years no however this year seems to be an exception. Normally there is a little moisture around but between it being crazy dry and several days with sustained winds a small spark north of us burned 10000 acres quickly

@Booner21 nailed it. We really are at 11 weeks of no measurable rain. Corn is realty dry and that dust is like gasoline if a spark gets near it goes up in seconds. And the beans might as well just be paper at this point. We finally got 2 days of rain today and yesterday. Maybe my clover and rye will start growing

Occasionally they are started in a combine... hot bearing or residue in the wrong place. We spend a lot of time blowing our machine out with leaf blowers. The big fire spell that happened throughout Illinois was mostly due to fields getting really dried out from a hot spell. Then a couple 50 mph wind days and all it takes is a shlthead throwing a cigarette out the window.

I'd say they aren't common. Maybe one or two in a county in a year.

So I keep experimenting and learning. This year I made my kitchen sink mix and triple seeded it to keep up with the grazing pressure. First time ever that I used grain sorghum. Apparently I got the tall stuff because it' 5-7 feet in some spots and thick. Fortunately all of the small stuff underneath is flourishing and keeping up with the pressure. This was my view last weekend. The plots are out in front and to the left where it's green. probably 30-40 yards to the front edge of the plot, with cover in front of me.

I watched one doe come from the far end and begin eating her way into the high sorghum. She finally put a bush between me and her so I could start swatting the mosquitoes that had been in my ears for an hour. That's when I looked to my left where 3 more were staring at me. They turned and trotted out quickly, followed by the one I had been watching, followed by 2 more I never saw enter the field in front of me! Next year, shorter sorghum and less of it!

It doesn't take much. In a mix i'd keep it under 5#/acre for sure.

First sit. I don’t expect much. Just poking at the edges.

tried to upload a pic but the system said file to large.
Have to look into that later.
How was it, Bill? I'll hit NEMO Wed or Thurs. Be there till rifle comes in...

1st sit yest. Didnt expect much, and it didnt disappoint. Saw zero.

Sat last nite ... 1 doe and 2 bucks. One buck was the big 9, he spent 1.5 hours at 4 pm moving into the clover/WR filed and then slowly walk, sniff, rub, chew, browse through the transition are 80 yards in front of me. Was fun to watch, they are in a different mind zone right now. No bachelor groups, the dominant bucks are starting to move indepently with focus on the girls.

Decided to stay in and work this afternoon, glad I did, was quiet.

Does are on pins and needles because the little guys are harassing them. Some movement of older bucks but not what a I thought a 40 degree temp drop would deliver..

Same, @Bill 3 mature does at 150 yds and a little spike grunted at me but I never got eyes on him and one orphan that has made our farm home

No kidding ... the does are high strung right now ... in the filed feeding, then alert and next instant running back to cover ... then back into the field and feeding. Very unsettled.

Saw 1 tonight as I was getting down about 40 yards from me. With the wind I never saw or heard her until it was too late. Son saw 7 had 2 good does in range but we both agreed no one wanted to process a deer tomorrow, lol. All our movement is 430 or after right now. Found 2 brand new paths they created in the last month. Not sure why, nothing has changed and one actually walks them right in front of our ground blind. I'll try and upload the pics the boy took later tonight.

Not so live but I had a good sit this morning. Had a 125 ish 8pt come by at about 35 yards on a huge lone doe. I think she is no more than a day away from coming in. I'll be in the same stand in the morning. At least it wont be 16 degrees. There were 2 other 2 y/o 8's on a doe but I think that was just little boy chasing.

This spike was looking for love, he pulled a wide 8 point out of the hardwoods because of the racket he was making grunting and chasing a lone doe.

This is one on my naked trees I needed cover for. This is on my property behind my house, the Christmas tree branches cover me perfectly, there are 3 branches total, not sure if you can see the bottom one in the picture but it covers all of me when I’m sitting.

Clear skies, light breeze, temps in the lower 40's. Hopefully tonight is the night. Tomorrow and Sunday are supposed to be quite windy.

Deer were feeding early and often this afternoon. Passed on a few doe and on a scrubby 7 or 8 pointer. May regret that one. No signs of rutting activity.

Did somebody not tell the deer about Daylight Savings Time? I got out too late on Sunday morning! They were in my parking area when I drove up.....
