Well I'm about to give up for the night. It has been a rollercoaster couple of nights.
Last night I got out of the blind to take a wizz and an owl landed about 15 feet from me on a low branch. The second time I got out to relieve myself a deer barked at me from about 20 yards up the hill in a dark Sitka spruce forest. It gave me quite a start. As it moved off barking, another deer barked about 50 yards away on the opposite side of the blind. Figuring they were satisfied to talk to each other, I crept back into the blind. That second deer showed herself, but it was too early to shoot, so I watched her graze and wander off. The moon came out and lit up the whole area, so I snuck out over to another field and saw three deer, but they were too far off to shoot.
Tonight a hind gave me a great shot, but I'm holding out for a stag this week. The moon is fantastic, and the partial cloud cover is making for good conditions, but the big group of deer that has been feeding here nightly is nowhere to be seen. It has been a magical couple of nights, but good lord is it frustrating. It's 3 a.m. and I'm exhausted. Thinking about calling it a night.
