How early to plant a white/red clover mix for a lick creek plot?

The plot in my avatar was planted with durana and LC's mix the first of September last year. The PIC was taken on the 28th of September. The durana took off this past spring and here's a PIC taken 5/26/16. I would recommend around Labor Day or a couple of weeks earlier for you in the mountains since you receive frost earlier then we do in eastern NC. The clover will get a good start, root wise, this fall and should explode next spring and outcompete the grass and weeds if you sow the clover thick enough.
I went ahead and planted it yesterday. 1# each of Kopu II, Alice, and jumbo ladino II along with 2 # each of Oasis chicory and Delar Salad Burnett and some oats, on a RU scorched field on a third of an acre X 2.I ground it in with tires of a 4 wheeler. Got a little rain last night and some again tonight.
