Cheap labor

I don’t want this to come off as racist, or however someone can spin it, but I am looking for some cheap skilled labor, and people always tell me to find some Mexicans to do the job, and I have read on here that Some just hang out at your local home improvement stores looking for work.

Where, and how does one go about locating a few of these laborers?

I can’t imagine it going over well posting such a thing on Facebook, or on Craigslist. I am sure word of mouth would be one way, but I don’t live there, and I don’t know how one would ask around to the locals?

In some of our small towns there is indeed a gathering place where you can hire day laborers. They gather in the morning and you drive up and say how many workers you need and off you go. Almost any of the local hangouts can tell you where they are located. Look for a fast food restaurant where the "liars Club" old timers gather for breakfast and I am sure they can tell you where to find them.

What skills are you looking for?

Are you white? Then yes you are a racist ... the fact that you offer an opportunity to someone who wants to work for pay rather than just giving a hand out means you are a bad person.

I'm in the same state you are and in the trades, I've never seen the legendary lines of workers here. Down south it's a different story. My brother inlaw hires them from hardware store parking lots down there.
Besides, mud/ tape isn't something you wanna hire anyone for. Maybe try craigslist? It's skilled work and the guys good at doing it will know there worth so don't anticipate a super deal. My Mexican workers make more than the white guys I have. It's a common misconception. But yes id hire Mexicans if possible, it'll likely be better work, faster and cleaner. It's not racist if I admit another race is better than mine lol

Im guessing there is going to be a bit of a shortage of those individuals in your greater area, most of the cheaper migrant labor around WI is tied to the dairy industry and southern WI farming. In Cali I know you can literally pick up workers at pick up points. You might be able to do something to that effect over in the Superior Duluth area but I doubt it. The winter weather would alone prohibit that.

What I think you will find upon looking is that some contractors will have legal and/or illegal workers working for them on a more cash no benefits basis. Like Northbound said its not a common thing here in the upper midwest. You will see a mix of diff immigrant workers but most employers that work the system this way know by word of mouth and employ family connections whom they are hiring and they also know that this workers will come and go a bit. Better to find a reputable local, that knows how to hang and sling mud than invite street individuals into your home that you know absolutely nothing about.

I will probably go back to my original plan of doing it myself. But I really do hate mudding ceilings.

Are there any Amish in your area? You will have to bring them to and fro to your project unless it is in buggy range.

I don’t recall seeing any, and being I am in forest area, and not a farming area, I doubt it.
