Who is your least favorite author or "T.V. Hunter"

There are many things I've learned by watching Bill Winke. Personally I like him over all the rest. Very informal shows.

The Wensel boys are my favorite whitetail authors by far. Nobody even comes close to those guys.
And they don't do TV hunts which is all the more reason that I admire them.
I have little use for the commercialism, high-fives, and phoniness of TV hunting shows. I've stopped watching those shows years ago.

Oh Tap, how old are you. I really like the Wensels too, but other than Fed Bear, the Wensels were SOME of the first to do VHS video tapes of whitetail hunting to be sold before there was any hunting on cable television. My guess is they are like a lot of folks - too old and too fat to be on TV these days.

Their two Essential Encounters/Primal Dreams videos are the finest outdoor vids out there. They are well done, classy, and respectful toward game.
As far as books go, Bowhunting Rutting Whitetails was ground breaking. I bought my copy from Gene in the early 1980s for $15...I see it on Amazon for $270.

Well TAP I stand corrected you do know about the videos. Again, shout out to the Wensels really good stuff I agree.

Haven't watched a hunting show in 20 years. I don't even know who you are all talking about.
The last few I saw were infomercials.

Wait, I did watch the DVD by outreach outdoors about Paul Knox 2 years ago. That's the last hunting related thing I've watched besides our live from the stands thread :)

Now I would like to see that DVD if anyone knows where to get it.

Gene and Barry have both had some health issues in the past year or two but they are both still hunting and killing some mature bucks (and it has been a while since either one of them was "thin"). I believe they will turn 72 in a few days. As far as the current crop of t.v. hunting celebs, I just watch bits and pieces except for the Deer and Deer Hunting shows and I like those pretty well. Mike Mitten, who was heavily involved with the Wensel's videos Essential Encounters and Primal Dreams writes excellent articles for the traditional magazines and has written a book as well. Just re-read the Wensel's last books.

Bill,

Where can one find that DVD about Paul Knox?

I only learned about him after his death.

I have read all of his threads and hang on every word.

I feel like he was my best friend!!!

I'm going to find out for sure and post back again but I believe it was titled "Deliberate" and can be purchased in the DVD sections of Outreachoutdoors.com. For $5.

Don't want to mislead anyone, it's not all about Paul, it's a hunting video that has excerpts of Paul. If you ever talked to the man much you won't come away without a tear.

I'll find out for sure and post again.

I'm 58. I can't remember how I first heard of Gene Wensel...could have been through Stump Sitters, but I bought Bowhunting Rutting Whitetails and read it about 1,000 times. My copy has so much highlighter ink that it probably weighs an extra pound!
I've been to Barry's boot camp, watched the vids and read anything and everything they've written.
They have both been an inspiration and motivators to me.
They've been an influence on how I hunt and my strong adherence to ethics.

Today is their birthdays. (They are twins in case anyone doesn't know)

5 bucks and there are 6 different videos, just ordered a couple. Wish they would get here before this storm so i have something to do in wind and rain.

The Wensels are from Pa. originally, so they know all about hunting Pa. and in particular - the mountainous areas. The high-pressure " orange army " of the Pa. woods as they call it, is one of the reasons they moved to Montana some years ago. 1 1/2 yr. old forkhorns weren't cutting it for them. They wanted to see more bucks make it past 1 1/2 yrs. old and back then that was about impossible in Pa. They've moved to Iowa if I recall reading about them in an article.

I bought their video " Bowhunting October Whitetails " done with Rick Blase and filmed by Gene Bidlespacher ( sp.? ). I got it years ago when it first came out. I went to Gene's seminars and have 2 books - " Bowhunting Rutting Whitetails " and " One Man's Whitetail ". My Rutting Whitetails book is dog-eared and beat from reading it so many times. I highlight mine too, but Gene did a lot of heavy BOLDFACE type on things he wanted to emphasize to the reader. Very funny guys too !! Great sense of humor. I liked the tribute Gene paid to Barry, saying, " Barry is the very best deer hunter I know ..... bar none. "

I too, like the fact that the Wensels have a sense of history and appreciate the likes of Pope & Young, Fred Bear, and Ishi - a native American who hunted with a traditional stick bow. They respect the deer and don't treat them like a money-making commodity.

I don't really like any of the canned hunting shows any more, way to many commercials and it seems the bulk of the shows are HF or just some celeb on a managed guided outfitters place acting like pimps.

The worst of the worst least favorite for me is the Busbice clan on Wildgame Nation...complete tools that epitomize everything that is wrong in the hunting industry, absolute morons.

Sorry I have been working quite a bit and haven't been on here much lately so I missed this, Bill is correct on the Paul Knox segment it's on Outreach Outdoor's video Deliberate. Here's a link to the video, good watch!

I love Tiffany and hate lee. No reason other than she is hot. I like to watch hunting shows because there are a lot of bucks I will never see in my area. I do hate the theatrics after they kill a deer. It is not easy to kill deer around here. I have been lucky to kill my share and my buddies have done well too. I don't know anyone that acts like the people in these shows. When I take a shot I am usually shaking for 30 minutes because I can't believe I got one and how the hunt unfolded. I do like Shocky but that probably has more to do with production value than anything else. I also like Stan Potts but only because I work with a guy that is his twin. He also talks just like him, they may have been separate at birth

Thanks Scott,
I thought so but wasn't sure.

Yep, she is smoking hot! You would not kick her out of bed for eat'n crackers!

My wife is equally as hot, but thank God she does not hunt. I would NEVER have killed a deer, too much of a distraction to have something like that in a tree stand right next to you in the same tree!

I will say that Don Kisky is probably my favorite modern day TV Hunter.

I am not saying who I don't like. That is my business and we need less negative in this profession. I like Greg Miller's writing. I like Bill Winke's shows and his concept of recent video. It takes revenue to produce it all - so I tolerate the ads.

Gene and Barry Wensel are legends! Gene is the first deer hunter master writer in my book. Barry tells great stories and has a great sense of humor. I can't imagine anyone I would consider close to those two. I heard Gene Wensel in Nashville, TN when my dad was still alive and my son was there(over 27 years ago). It is a memory that stirs my emotions. I almost signed up for Barry's Deer Hunting Camp but spent my money on my greenhouse.

I like Whitetail Freaks because they have big bucks and those show the mistakes when a deer gets by them.

I like Brad Herndon's writing on terrain and hunting.

Lee and Tiffany are good for our industry. Guys we need women and kids in our sport. Numbers and image matter in this world in MHO.

Do we have saturation on the outdoor TV channels? What do you think ...

I only spoke of videos.
As far as writers go I'm pretty impressed with Steve Bartylla's books. He last book offered some often over looked but common sense approaches to hunting the animals we spend so much time taking care of.

There are hunting show personalities, actual good hunters, and there are land management experts. There is probably some cross over between them all but you can't group all of the hunting shows and online people together. There are a number of outdoor people I like in both the hunting and fishing community. I agree though Nugent sucks.

That is why the OP posted a dumb question ... authors versus TV personalities .... kinda like sayin do you prefer ice cream or hex head screws.

I do like Bill Wineke, have watched him for a long time. He shares a great deal or knowledge about all aspects of hunting, scouting, stand location, land prep, etc. in a very low key way. he would be good for young hunters to watch.

As I watch him, the show is not about him but rather the many hunters young and old who he hunts with. Remember he did not chase endorsements, they chased him ...

At the end of the day, owning great farm land in Iowa or Illinois would make us all experts ... ;)
