Who is your least favorite author or "T.V. Hunter"

WTNUT

I read a Bill Winke article tonight. He may be a really great guy, father, husband and hunter. I don't know him at all. But, I have read tons and tons of his articles and more so than any author that writes for the industry, I just feel sick after reading a lot of his articles. Sorry, but I don't like the content, the style and too often he is promoting something as opposed to sharing valuable knowledge.

As for the modern day "T.V. Hunter", I do like several and take them for what they are: paid spokespersons who sell their name and and endorsements for a price. My least favorite is probably Tom Miranda. It pains me to write that because he probably knows way way more about hunting than most of us, but dang I hate his style and personality on T.V.

I don't like any of them anymore! They have all gone the path of advertisers money in front of realistic hunting. But someone must like them, they are still on tv!

There are those that do and those that watch it on tv. Those hunting "Personalities" aren't selling anything I need!

The Wensel boys are my favorite whitetail authors by far. Nobody even comes close to those guys.
And they don't do TV hunts which is all the more reason that I admire them.
I have little use for the commercialism, high-fives, and phoniness of TV hunting shows. I've stopped watching those shows years ago.

The worst for me is Nugent, and it's not even close.

I do like the guy from MeatEater. Good show, and seems like a good guy/hunter.

The Drury brothers seem like good people as well. I like their style of life and hunting.

I watched that stuff like mad when I first was learning to hunt (as I am self taught) - boy was I stupid.....for watching that crap! I would have been better off just not watching those at all! For many of those it's all about entertainment - antler porn, selling you something, some sort of fist pumping or chest pounding and branding themselves. I haven't watched a show in years and I rarely read the magazines any more. The shows I liked either had something about habitat work or why they where hunting at a particular location. Most of those folks where simply told to hunt this stand and kill this deer - if I had enough money I could do that too! I'm not saying its easy - but it isn't reality for 95% of hunters either.

I mostly read the books now - I like Mr. Jeff Sturgis and Mr. Steve Bartylla. Or follow forums - because I would much rather get info from guys that have nothing to gain, and have done it themselves in the real world! Some guys on forums are chest beaters and see themselves as experts or try to sell you something, but for the most part forums are a great tool to reach a more practical deer hunter and manager. You want to deal with an "expert" or someone to sell you something......go contact the "Q"!

I like to stick with information for my type of terrain and area Western WI. So couple of my favorites are Tom Indrebo has written good book and a number of articles was well ahead of anybody in the deer management and habitat. The other would be Jeff Sturgis has written some good books and articles also. He is familiar with bluff country and lot of good info on stand use and weather along with great website loaded with info. I know good number of hunters and property owners one thing I see some great hunting land that is disturbed year in and year out and then they complain of no mature deer. If they would have left alone and just did some scouting and applied better hunting tactics would have had much more success.

I don't watch a whole lot of TV, regardless of what's on, so even less of the hunting shows. In saying that I'll also admit I've watched most of the Chasing November online shows that Bill Winke / Midwest Whitetail has done. There's certainly advertisements but most of the hunts seem to be just normal guys in various states that enjoy hunting and trying to capture it on film.

I agree with Tap 100% on the Wensel brothers. They are ABSOLUTELY my favorite whitetail guys. They don't push stuff like the rest. I have a couple of their books, and I remember one of them said that high-fence, pay-to-hunt style of hunting is the cancer that will ruin hunting. They predicted that whitetail hunting would become " highest bidder " gets the good hunting. Gene and Barry both railed against commercializing whitetails as it would take fair-chase and " sport " out of deer hunting. Boy - did they hit it right !!!

I don't watch those channels anymore either. Fist-pumping, chest-beating screamers look totally childish. Idiots in my book. Preaching, pontificating Ted N. is a huge PUKE !! What an embarrassment to sportsmen. I think the " spirits " he often refers to aren't just lurking in his woods.;)

Their two Essential Encounters/Primal Dreams videos are the finest outdoor vids out there. They are well done, classy, and respectful toward game.
As far as books go, Bowhunting Rutting Whitetails was ground breaking. I bought my copy from Gene in the early 1980s for $15...I see it on Amazon for $270.

I do enjoy watching Lee/Tiffany and the Drury's. Mainly because they hunt in my general neighborhood, and there are a lot of big bucks to look at.

Bad: Chris bracket and ted nugent

Good: whitetail adrenaline, heartland bow, hallowed ground, drury are spoiled rotten but they do it right at least.

Well you are his target audience... you think reading is somehow beneath some form of video ...

There are no "modern day" hunters ... just folks with more gimmicks ... once again ... they got you Bull!

There aren't many but look up Heimo Korth....

I don't like any of them really
it might be ME< but I cannot see all the hype they blow out of proportion after a kill, or the lie's they tell at times
I get its a SHOW and they try to entertain
but I don't find what they do entertaining, I don't video my own hunts, don't wish to watch others.
Hunting has and will be a personal thing with me
I enjoy seeing pic;s of average folks and there game
but could care less about the Items they used to get it
and HATE it when I hear about the soiled one's
and the crying so many do, bout HOW hard they worked LOL

Haven't watched a hunting show in 20 years. I don't even know who you are all talking about.
The last few I saw were infomercials.

Wait, I did watch the DVD by outreach outdoors about Paul Knox 2 years ago. That's the last hunting related thing I've watched besides our live from the stands thread :)

Bill,

Where can one find that DVD about Paul Knox?

I only learned about him after his death.

I have read all of his threads and hang on every word.

I feel like he was my best friend!!!

Paul Knox had MANY fans on here and several other forums. I never met the man, but it seems he was happy to help anyone who asked for it. He didn't just throw out a few words - he answered folks questions in great detail. I never saw even an inkling of impatience or testiness in any of his posts, despite duplicate questions from folks. Great guy.
