The Land of Milk and Honey

If there were ever a year to hurt myself the way I did, this may be the one. Here is the best buck I have seen all year. I never even got one of those rut cruisers we are used to. Unless you guys are seeing something I am not, he is a hard pass for me. Perhaps next year. I think he is the same buck I found a shed off of this spring that was smaller than I thought. If so, his frame did get a little bigger, but his 4’s shrunk. I’m thinking he’s 4 this year. What say you guys?

Hard time of year to judge because all deer rut differently and it effects their bodies differently as well. All that said, I'd guess 4 as well.

Nothing good showed up for your dad during rifle season?

I wouldn't disagree with him being 4. With that being said, whether I let him walk or not is relative to what else is around to target and if your property has a history of bucks making it to see the next year.

Rifle starts Wednesday so we’ll see. So far nothing interesting. I may go a mile North and try for a doe on day 1 and then spend the rest of the season tooling around our place.

Imagine how awesome it would be if you were ate up with coon hunting like we are with deer. You would be in high cotton! Coons everywhere and no one hardly would deny you permission to hunt.

But I agree, I don’t think that Deer is worth taking out this year.

I will be doing some doe shooting myself after gun season,Saw 21 doe/fawns and 5 bucks last night in 1 field with wheat cover crop.Tonight hunted travel route ans saw 1.It's cold enough they are hitting food pretty good.Wish I had some standing beans. This field is one of 4 all more than 40 acres but I can't see them from where I was, they have milo stubble and wheat.

I can't catch a raccoon to save my life. I managed to catch 2 possums and a cat, but the raccoons must be happy out in the forest eating berries or whatever they find there. Hopefully this snow will start making them a bit desperate for food.

The lower the temperature gets the less the coons move, especially if there is snow on the ground. Not uncommon for coons to hole up in a tree or in the ground for several days if temps are in the lower 20s or lower. They are basically in semi-hibernation, thus the reason a healthy coon has alot of fat!

@ T-max
I've been up in the Concordia area many times pheasant hunting. About everytime i've been, always see a nice buck on the side of the road when driving, and more turkeys than I've ever seen in my life, but have yet to see a single deer while all my time hunting in the field, lol.

That's a nice area up on the Republican River. We hunted snow geese up that way a lot in college. I've never deer hunted anywhere but around home, but hear there are some good bucks coming out of that area. If you are ever back that way, holler at me. 🙂
