Planted my big field today. Made two rounds (8 rows) around the perimeter and a cross through the center with Milo. Planted the rest of the field to soybeans. I’m a month or so I will try to take up the drone for a good shot. Should create some vertical cover and really break up the field. So that’s a 2 acre corn field, about an acre of milo total and 2.75 acres of beans. Should make for a good fall.

Here you can see the Kinze 3500 top drives I retrofit to my John Deere 7000. Money well spent. I had to get Kinze 3600 contact wheels to get the size I needed for good contact with my drive wheels. A little math on gear ratios and the planting chart from the 3600 manual is planting just right.

I found one a few days ago. It would hold tight until I got about 5 feet from it then it would bolt and run maybe 30 yards and lay down again. I would guess it was about 2 weeks old. We used to take "goofy selfies" before the days of cell phones when we would stumble onto one while doing field work. The first few days after they are born, they just pretend they are frozen and you can sit or lie down right next to them.

I had the drone up for a few other reasons so I decided to fly down and get an aerial of the plots. Corn in the front, soybeans and Milo in the back. There is a creek crossing in the upper left of the corn field where I plan to have a stand nearby. Orientation is weird as North is to the left. Shaping up nicely. You can see where my corn meter plugged on the second row about halfway through planting. Should make for some good brassica growth in those skips later.

North is to the right this time. You can really see the Milo strips now. Hoping to break up the field and create some security. I think it’s gonna accomplish that! Corn in the back.

It does. I wish more of the travel was actually on ours, but I am working with what I have and getting it figured out. Kind of a first world problem I guess…

As usual I am horrible about taking pics. I spread turnips, radishes, and rape on my OG 3/4 acre food plot on Wednesday. I crimped the buckwheat and volunteer rye down and followed up the areas with heavy foxtail and horse nettle with some Gly. Yesterday I got turnips, radishes, rape and MRC spread over my entire 3.5 acre bean field. I also got urea spread over my Milo strips in a light drizzle. Last night we got 1-1/2” of rain to water it all in! I finally timed one perfect! Biggest problem is I totally forgot to spread my oats on both plots. I can do that later I guess. I have decided to spread clover over my corn field after it matures. The plan for now is to turn it into a perennial clover field for a few years. Maybe the whole 2 acres. Maybe just 1 with the other rotating between other crops. We’ll see.

I hate that app. That is since I started the system. Like that means anything.... I would MUCH rather have the annual than that meaningless number...

They aren't quite canopied and that is a great question. I broadcast into giant corn last year and the little plants barely grew until the corn started to dry down, then they started to take off. I am hoping for something similar this year. We'll see. The weeds keep trying to make a go of it, so there is hope?

I need that! The app I use is hooked to my weather station, so it is my own data. I wonder where yours gets its data from? I'm gonna give it a look.
