The Land of Milk and Honey

Are you planting NWSG around edge?

I planted CRP CP-33 years ago which was 110ft strip and the Switch has stayed switch and the NWSG allowed weeds and trees to grow in and stayed shorter than the switch. The switch also stays standing better with snow.I also like the fact I can drill switch with a regular drill. When I did mine I had to plant wheat in the area of the strip and then in spring I sprayed the wheat and drilled the NWSG or switch right after.

Thoughts on this creek that flows through here? These two fields will both be planted moving forward. They will have NWSG buffer strips around the edges of them. I plan on removing the junk trees along the stream banks and would like grass pretty much to the edges of the creeks. I have also thought about planting shrubs or desirable trees along the banks as well. Anyone have experience with willow? Other tree or shrub species to consider in this riparian area? I want natives only and they should get plenty of sunlight when I am done. On this picture, the North bank of the creek gently slopes down to the water, but the South bank is quite steep. Maybe a 4-5' tall cut bank.

I've planted black willow cuttings. They're really easy to start, and around here at least, easy to find for cuttings. They're also a very beneficial native species.

I have Buttonbush growing along our banks. I like it quite a bit better than Willows or Sycamore. Deer hammer it.

Big day yesterday. I helped dad burn a little corner of a pasture that didn’t go when we burned the main part a couple weeks ago, got some spraying done to prep for my buffer strips, fixed a hydraulic leak on the 3020 and used it to lightly disc my corn plot to chop the stalks. Weather was perfect and dad sure seemed to enjoy spending the day together. He even bought me a biscuit from McD’s! 😃

That's a great day!!!

When you get permission to do something new, don't waste any time. Haha! We had winterized the 3 point sprayer so I got the backpack sprayer and nuked the new buffer strips before the old man could change his mind. 🤣 Ordered seed already as well. If you do any amount of backpack spraying I would seriously look into one of these three-nozzle wands. One of the best investments I have made.

Late to the party, but where did you get that three headed wand?

I'm jealous of you guys who always remember to take pics of your work. I tend to rely on trail camera pics. 😂 Had a farmer call me a couple nights ago and offer up the corn he cleaned out of his planter. I was planning on doing all soybeans this year, but dad convinced me to get that corn in the ground. Planter worked perfect and I think it is just over 2 acres of 30" row corn. Other plot will be 3-1/2 acres of soybeans and milo. Hoping for a little rain and a good fall! Ground was plenty moist when I put this in no-till.

Nice work!

Looks great!

It's pretty remarkable how much further ahead you guys are than us. My rye at home isn't even a foot tall yet.

Any specs on that crimper? How does the side by side pull it?

Man, I had a hard frost on my windshield Saturday morning.

I'm sorry for your dad's and your loss. I hope you guys are doing ok. Spend plenty of time with him in the days and weeks ahead.

You guys ever have a spot on your place that always seems just right? It’s sunny when it’s cold out and in the shade when it’s hot? Maybe the wind is always just right?

My dad came home from turkey hunting last Friday to discover that my stepmother hadn’t woken up yet. Long story short, she never did. He’s a tough old boy, but this one has knocked him down hard. I thought this picture was fitting as he and I talk and try to figure out what comes next. There is no fun to be had yet, but this spot is his favorite spot in the whole world. I imagine us meeting here a lot to navigate the road ahead.

Hug your loved ones boys, because you never know…

Man that pic is deep. You can feel the conversation. Sorry for yalls loss.

Damn that's rough. My condolences to you and your family.

Sorry to hear that. That's hard.

Sorry to hear that. I have a spot like that, back home in Nebraska on the farm there. There used to be this huge old dead tree laying on top of a house size mound of dirt next to our creek. The log has long since rotted away. Not really sure how the mound/knob of dirt got there. Almost seems man made in away, as it seems so out of place, but at the same time I can't figure out why anyone would have made a mound there. Anyhow I sat there on that log many times growing up just pondering things. When I am on the creek at home I almost always find myself wandering out of the way to go stand on that knob of dirt. I feel like you and your Dad have a pretty sound relationship and that it is growing more the last few years as you "work" the land together. Probably feels alot more like your equals now as a opposed to the child/ parent relationship.

Sorry to hear about your families loss. That's a hard one.

I found one a few days ago. It would hold tight until I got about 5 feet from it then it would bolt and run maybe 30 yards and lay down again. I would guess it was about 2 weeks old. We used to take "goofy selfies" before the days of cell phones when we would stumble onto one while doing field work. The first few days after they are born, they just pretend they are frozen and you can sit or lie down right next to them.

That is really a cool pl,what drone did you use

Your farm does look like it has a nice layout and good travel corridors leading to yours.

Tell me that isn't correct... that you've gotten 64 inches of rain this yr!
