Scott's habitat improvements

When my cedars get here next
Are these all Christmas trees? It's funny that you've had to buy them as I've got 1000's that have self seeded! My problem is already being over 75% cover/woods, AND when I do need some it's getting enough of the rootball to move them.
I bought 80 total christmas trees, 20 each Cannan Fir, Doug Fir, Fraser Fir and Scotch Pine. I thiught I would try the christmas tree thing with the wife really just screening:D and if I get some tress that's a plus.

Not a bad plan!!!

Things are finally waking up here, it was in the mid 20's this A.M. and night forecasted below freezing for awhile yet.

Maples coming to life.

Last year I planted some Hazelnut trees, tubed some and planted some with no protection. Both seem to be doing ok.

This is a couple acres switch grass field planted last year, I came across a Michigan eco type switch Southlow and gave it a shot.

I think we planted these red pine when my kids were still in school 8-10 yrs ago because they got them for Earth Day or Arbor day or something like that. They have got beat up ever since they have been planted but they still keep on coming back.

I can't wait to get these trees outside full time, Dunstans/Chinese chestnuts about 15-18", maybe next week.

Must be tree planting season because I seem to aways get something muddy or stuck.

Everything is looking good! I like the Christmas tree idea!
Have your DCO acorns sprouted yet? I'm keeping a watch on mine, but not sprouted yet.

I've tried for 3 yrs now and not very good luck, the first year I thought it was me but every other type of acorn I've stated has worked. I had about 20 that sprouted and only 4 are still growing. I think my next plan is to buy some seedlings. SOrry about them not taking.

I haven't given up on them. I took them out of frig and fixen to put them outside in some pots just to see. It may be some kinda stratification problem...just a guess. What you think?

Could be but I stratified them just like all the others.

This last week I got some stuff done, planted a couple apple and a pear tree. my trees from NCR came yesterday and I'll be getting them in today, 75 Norway, 75 Red cedar and 20 Balsam firs.

Picked up some stone to put on the black plastic last night,

Willow cuttings

Stared getting the seedlings I started inside moved outside, still had a hard frost on THurs. morning so they aren't outside full time yet.
Chestnuts and Sawtooth

Persimmons

Don't think I've ever got a trail cam pic of a vulture before, big birds.

My first time odering from NCR, really nice big plugs.

Norway Spruce

Red Cedar

Nice

Super update. This plugs look awesome.

If I wanted to order some of those plugs, what would I ask for?

The Ash trees I hinge cut are still alive for atleast another year.

We've had 2"+ of rain since Sat. things are pretty wet.

Last falls rye plot with clover on the right.

Some spots not real heavy on the rye but the clover and vetch are doing well.

Couple progression pics of the rye from a trail cam.

That clover and vetch looks like its ready to take off fast soon. Nice pictures!

Yea with all the moisture we've had lately if we get some sun it should take off.

Transplanted some Dunstans out of 18 cell to 1gal pots today, I'm not keeping as many back this year as previous years. I ordered and received 50-5' Miracle tubes last week, I got 10 planted today, 5 SWO and 5 Sawtooths.

THese Dunstans will get planted in the next little bit when I get time.

Dunstans transplanted to 1gal pots.

Planted 8 out in the hay field, yellow flags are Red Cedar and Norways.

This alfalfa plot is atleast 3 years old and grass is starting to creep in as the alfalfa goes. It needs mowed so after mowing it I'll decide what I'm going to do with it.

The last little bit it seems like it has rained on my days off so I haven't got a lot done as far as mowing, spraying and some food plot work.

2 track going to my plots

This isn't usually this full this late in the spring.

This spring I planted a couple Wolf River apple trees and a Kieffer pear.

Last year I planted 2 rows of Norway spruce to try and screen the neighbors. They seem to be doing ok.

I am still impressed with the Norways I got from NCR this spring, they all look good.

Miscanthus is doing good also, I'm not going to plant the e-wheat screen and see what the Miscanthus does.

The Emerald Ash borer has struck again and killed my favorite late season sit.

Cleaned out some tree tubes and found some nests and girdled oaks.

My dad passed away 6yrs ago and I can't bring myself to get rid of his blind. Deer hunting was one thing we enjoyed together. Wind storm picked it up and smashed it but didn't move his stool.

Apparently buckwheat will grow anywhere, even in the back of a pick-up, must have spilled some.

Scott-will that high water hurt those trees?

What is replacing the ash in those diseased areas?

I would take Dad's stool and hang it in the house or in a hunting shack if you have one. Grandkids might like to have it. I still have my Dad's red wool hunting coat.
