Miscanthus Giaganteus propagation from cuttings.

Fertilized my MG last week and we got 3/4" of rain the last couple days, I want to get this brush hogged but didn't have time today. Cut a bunch with a hand saw just for kicks, this is just like bamboo.

Root ball is about 2' across.

That's work! :)

I've used a hand saw, chain saw and brush hog. I like the brush hog the best.

I only did a few clumps and decided to wait till I could get the tractor back there.;) Won't be till Sun.

I had asked the owner of Maple River Farms last year when I picked mine up if it was necessary to cut the old stalks off. He said if I wasn't using them for biofuel (haha), that it was ok to leave them standing to provide thicker cover. Should I read more into that topic?

If Don says you don't have to cut the dead stalks away I would take that as gospel. I cut mine out of habit. Figure maybe it will let the sun warm the roots faster and get me some early growth. Maybe I'm wasting my time. Next year I'll leave some standing and see how it goes.

I have always cut mine back also, I can see where it would give you a lot more screen if you left it up. I'll have to try it seeing how I only cut a few clumps yesterday.

I'll keep watching mine and take some early Spring progress pics as well. Mine right now just have about an inch of growth, some with nothing visible yet.

Not much growth on mine, maybe 1/4 to 1/2"

You will get get a much better plant if you cut it to 3 inches or less in early spring before it sends up new growth. I'll take some photos of new growth early next week. I use a chain saw or loppers to cut it back in early spring. Eliminate competition and mulch (MG likes water) if you want your plants to max growth.

Ok this discussion got me thinking and I had the brush hog out today and brush hogged part of my screen and left the other part for comparison, we'll see. One thing is there is a ton of thatch/mulch on it after brush hogging it.

Can someone summarize 15 pages of posts on this stuff for me to save time LMAO - seriously I will read them ha ha.

Haha! Yes, here you go.

Plant some for privacy, road screens, food plot screens or concealment with travel corridors for getting in undetected. You will love it :)

Order the rhizomes or take cuttings and plant them :)

How long does it take to get 8 feet tall and can you kill it if you need to kill it.

I think within just a few weeks of logging onto my first habitat forum. I may have had a chance but Brad, Stu and Paul were like my dealers back then. They got me hooked. :D.

Then John introduced me to cheap cuttings and fed my addiction. It's been down hill ever since.

We all might have troubles.

MG is starting to take off now, most of it looks like the first couple pics 2-3" but some of it is 6"+
