Miscanthus Giaganteus propagation from cuttings.

I encourage you to mulch if you don't already do so .... it's my experience that miscanthus doesn't tolerate competition very well ... especially grass. You might try a strip of 4-5 plants and see what effects are achieved; a little test to determine if it is worth mulching. Good luck!
Thx

Here is my 1st year MxG planted this Spring, roughly 4-5' tall:

And these pics are from the end of August, end of their 2nd growing year:

My bro took a picture of the Miscanthus we planted this spring. This picture shows the spot with the best growth but I'm happy with the first summer of growth. Lots of rain all spring and summer but not a drop since around September 19th. Should have hit the weeds/grass one more time.....

Looks great, thanks for sharing! I really like how they look now with the reddish tinted tassels on top.

The tassels come on real late, cool looking.

Missed the last few post. Looking good everyone.

I like the later tassel in silver.

Pleased with year two. Road on right, road screen on left. I bet some of the locals are scratching their head by now. Or just filing it under, he's a nut job :D

Looking good Bill!

I was in the yard yesterday and a guy pulled in because he had to know what that grass was and where to get some.

Looks like I'm not the only nut job around the county.

Here's some of my MG yesterday, these are the exception not the norm, the norm is 5-6' which still makes a decent screen. The singles on the right were planted this year.

Looks good. Wait til next year.

Man I have some going on the third year in 2016 and still look very thin with one or two 5 ft stems. What would happen if I kept mowing them for a year would they thicken up ?

BSM - What growing zone are you in? What kind of soil are they planted in? Well drained, wet or seasonally wet soil? Could be one of those, they are the only times I've heard of these not growing well.

I'm zone 4 in central Wisconsin in sand

It might be not enough moisture if you are in sand, Oakseeds suggested mulching around the to keep the competition down but this should help with moisture also.

Good points, Scott! I've also read (mapleriverfarms.com) that establishment is very important for growth, and thus the need to have a good bed preparred, and control the weeds at least that 1st year. So the mulching might solve both issues.

Looks covered above but as for mowing. If you cut a stalk down it resprouts two stalks at the cut and becomes very week.
If I were to try mowing to thicken the plant I would want to mow it to the ground. Literally.

That's what I was thinking was to mow it to the ground once or twice before mid August.

try some high k fertilizer next spring (late may).... supplemental watering (if convenient for you) in mid-thru-late summer when max. growth of warm season grasses occurs. Good luck

Big snow what county u in. I tried growing some in northern waupaca last year and it never came back.
I also dig it up and transplanted after first year, which might have killed it
