My recent hinge cutting has brought in some new ones, and they are already fighting over who gets to be the boss.
Found this down at the creek. Would loved to have seen him in another year or two.

Is that dead head something you had on camera that you wondered what happened to? Looks like a really nice up and comer.

I can’t be certain but I think he is one I had on camera that disappeared. I do believe he was a young deer with good potential.

What kind of trees are you hinging? In the pics it looks like some hickories and maybe a few oaks??

Several hickories, poplar and black cherry. Not many oaks unless they are in the way.

The recent hinge cutting has brought in a new buck. This is coming out of the hinged area just before dark. Never saw this one before.

Big, rectangular, blocky body!! He'd be nice to keep around.

It's unusual to see a body that blocky at this time of the year. He must have skipped the rut....

A buddy of mine who's shed-crazy started looking in mid-January, particularly in suburban areas where the sheds don't last long. The lack of snow helped, but even so I was surprised at how many he found, including his first matched set. I'm still getting lots of pictures of bucks that are holding at my property. With the recent snow and forecasted temperatures, it will be March before we get to start looking again.

Our deer generally hold late. I've not seen any pics yet where a deer has shed even one side. I may do most of my shed hunting during spring turkey season and hope that I don't find one with a tractor tire.

We have deer that drop over a long period. The majority will start dropping any day now but... Some drop in December some hold until April around my area.

We see that here too. I wonder if it has anything to do with dominance / higher testosterone??

Most of the drops so far have been in VERY suburban areas, and the trail cams yesterday at one of the rural properties next to an 800 acre swamp showed two weeks of pictures with bucks still holding on...albeit lots of new guys that we hadn't seen all season - including some very unique racks. I wonder if something silly like road salt makes a difference. I have literally no clue.

I’ve read that it has a lot to do with the overall health of the animal. It sounds like a logical explanation but I just can’t say for certain.

Yes, we understand that, but the discussion here is about timing (early versus late) of the drop rather than what causes the drop. The following article quotes Dr. Grant Woods saying exactly what I said above about the overall health of the deer:
