Honey Bees

You where spot on, they had raised a new queen. It is a hive that dad gave me, it has a solid base with a screen bottom sitting on top of it, with a gap between the two. I decided to carefully inspect each frame this morning, when I got into the bottom box I noticed a lot of bees on the bottom of the screen, in between the two. I set the box off and pulled up the screen bottom, in with the workers was a beautiful young queen. Evidently when she returned from here matting flight she went underneath and stayed. 20210822_071453_HDR.jpgShe is now safely in the hive.20210822_070939.jpg

Glad that worked itself out for you! Bees are just amazing all the way around.

The hive has a slot for an oil tray and that is where she went in, because of the screen bottom she couldn't get into the hive. I never thought about that happening, something I will seal off from now on.

Well I made a sticky mess today and ended up with approximately 350lb of fall honey. Only pulled from 6 of my 7 hives and 5 of them were swarms this summer. Got roughly 180lbs off my big hive(240 for the year) and the rest averaged 35lbs. I’m happy with the results considering I started the spring with only 1 hive.

Hope the rest of the you bee keepers had a good harvest

Ours sucked this year, but it is what it is. Nice haul off of yours.

I harvested 16 gallons this year

Curious about the group's Varroa management Its the time of year to address the little bastards

How many test? How many empericaly treat? What miticides ?

We dont treat, chemical free here. Good or bad ... I am not into propping up any species that can't evolve enough to survive on their own.

I’m the same as Turkey Creek. For me they’re just a hobby if they don’t make it I’ll catch more next spring. I honestly feel that if we left the mites alone the bees would work it out. As it stands we’re trying to kill insects on insects with insecticides and it’s not working.

I'm just finishing up the second treatment with Formic Pro. I'll hit them around Thanksgiving with Oxalic Acid. 600 Lbs for me this year. Now I have to bottle it all up.

I don't treat with the same mentality as FC and TC, it is a hobby and I really only got honeybees to boost pollination on my property.. the honey is a bonus!!
Oddly I didn't even like honey until I got a hive, store stuff just tastes different to me.

I treated during a cooler week in July after my supers were off with Formic Pro. I did a mite wash a month ago and only had 2 mites. I did 2 rounds of OA a couple of weeks ago and then did another mite test on Saturday. Even after my Formic during the summer and 2 rounds of OA I had up to 15 mites from a single hive. I did Formic Pro again this weekend and checked my bottom boards a day later and they were full of dead mites. I probably do another round of OA when it gets colder.

Opened a hive up today to pour more feed in and one of my girls promptly hit me above my eye. Guess next time I’ll put my bee suit top on instead of just having on a T-shirt and ball cap ‍♂️ Now my eye is pretty much swollen shut. But my beer still tastes good

Been there done that! The ones on the forehead and face are the worst no where for that fluid to drain.

No worries. First sting this year. Hope I can get these girls through the winter. They have been by far the chillest hive I’ve ever had and they are robust too.

My wife who is a nurse sent me in to see the doctor yesterday afternoon as my eye was still swollen shut and my face was really swollen as well. Everyone at the Dr office had a good laugh looking at me. Now I’m on a high dose of steroids and antihistamines. And I now have 2 epi pens as he was concerned my body might be developing an allergic reaction to bee stings and I’m not close to medical care at my cabin.

I’ve heard that before about getting hyper sensitive to bee stings if you get stung to much over time.
I have always been lucky that stings don’t bother me much except for the initial sting while getting stung. Hope that never changes.

As far as my hives this year…very poor for some reason, I think mites. I didn’t treat much this summer because work has been so busy. Lost one hive in July and the others aren’t really that impressive, normally I’ve got a couple with four or five supers on them this time of year.

As do I......primarily for visitors who may have an allergy

I take pictures of my ugly self after every sting

Aside from a lotta laughs from my buddies, no real serious "reaction"

I've been allergic to them since I was a kid, put me in the hospital once.
When we decided to add bees to the farm I went to an allergy Dr to check about finishing my shots, though I never finished them.
After the hospital overnight my parents took me for weekly Dr visits for increasingly larger bee venom shots.
Back to the present, I had blood drawn and the Dr said it didn't show I was allergic to bees now, but to keep an epipen with me just in case.
Last spring I had one nail me right behind the ear and of course no epi.
It takes a good 20 minutes to drive myself to the er and even then my eyes were only a little swollen.
They gave me benadryl and a good scolding for not having my epi, but still, the first time since I was 8 or so I didn't have to take an epi shot.
