The Land of Milk and Honey

Milo is headed out nice! A week ago the beans were full of blossoms and I think the start of little pods. We really need a rain right now to make these plots perfect headed into fall, but they are still doing great!

Man, that is an awesome set up!

Took the drone down this calm morning for an update. I’m gonna walk those Milo rows and clip those giant pigweeds by hand. They are making seed and are giant! Maybe too late, but not all the seed is viable yet. Red hue kinda showing on the Milo heads. The red grass in the upper left is some Old World Bluestem I hand sprayed. I need to get in front of it. Things are looking good. Oh, and you can see the brassicas coming on in the far upper left of the photo in my original food plot. Nice!

Also spotted a couple does by the corn. Drone was at 400’, but it was calm and they got goosey. Glad to know they are afraid.

I definitely spanked your corn. I don't have a drone or I'd prove it 🤣

I keep those pigweed heads for the burn barrel. Everything is looking great!

Only the sickos pull weeds by hand. Welcome to the club 😃

Pics or it didn’t happen!!!

The coon and deer damage is much worse since the last time I flew over it. Good thing is the worst areas are going to be some of the first to get knocked down and overseeded for my master plan…

I’m trying to decide how to get them out. They are big enough I could only carry one or two at a time. You use a backpack? Some of it is lambsquarter and that doesn’t bother me as much (I have eaten quite a bit of it in my life). May leave it. Pigweed has to go though. But there is enough that transporting it may be a challenge.

I'll get my wife to lift me up in the bucket of the 3020. Best I can do ya for 😆

5 gallon buckets and scissors (with a bone notch in them). Pull the weed, cut the heads off and throw into bucket. Leave the rest of the plant there.

Plucked a soybean plant today. Quite a few pods. They aren’t very full yet, but we are 50-60 days or so from average frost.

Beautiful, healthy looking plant. What's the browse pressure like so far?

Did you innoculate the seeds? I don't see any N nodules? I pulled one the other day on my place that had between 20-25 nodules but not as many pods as yours.
What variety is this? Standard GMO beans?

I thought the browse was gonna be bad, but the rains allowed the beans to get ahead of it and they have stayed ahead so far. There are a few spots where they enter the field that show it some, but most of the plants look like this.

I did get them treated with inoculant but noticed I didn’t see nodules. Not sure what that’s about. They are a GMO very full season variety. Last time I chose a shorter maturity and my pods seemed to shatter early as they were fully mature by now. These are much further behind. I hope not too far.

I thought about actually digging one up to see if maybe I yanked it too hard and the nodules stayed in place.

I don't think that would be the case except in some extreme dry/compacted circumstances. The one I yanked out the other day was full of nodules and I didn't baby it coming out of the ground.

I pulled one on the opposite end of the field. It’s covered in nodules. Not sure why the that one was bare.

Awesome!

I spread oats over my whole soybean field on Wednesday and noticed one section of the field that the beans were so tall and thick you almost couldn’t walk through it. The trail cam there told the same story as I hadn’t seen a deer in that area for a couple weeks. I made the decision to broadcast more seed in there and mow it down. It is right in front of my blind and the area I need them the most. LOTS of thatch. Not sure if those plants can make it up through. Bumper year for beans coming too. The pods have gained a ton in just the last couple days. Here is what I came up with. You can see the roof of my redneck between the two trails I cut into the area in the upper right. I’m pretty sure dad cried the whole time I was mowing.
