Native Hunter Apples 2023

^ ^ ^ ^ Does Golden Hornet also turn red - or is that different crab?? At any rate, those are a good size for deer munching. Deer hitting the drops, Derek??
No that’s a Roadkill from BH..both fruited pretty significantly (like 200-300 apples on both trees when they were only like 5-7’ tall)…their 2nd year in the ground…the deer definitely vacuumed up all the ones my toddler didn’t eat..he loved both of them for some reason…they were a bit tart for an older taste palette…

Didnt think golden hornets were that small. They survive cold well, like zone 3 occasional -35 Deg F nights? How soon do they bloom?

How do you store them?
I had mine in the fridge in a plastic bag, but I left the top of the bag open so that air would circulate. I actually liked eating them right off the tree, but they have definitely sweetened up more in storage. I was slow about planting this cultivar, but I'm now very impressed - especially on the disease resistance.

My oldest AR Black is the oldest apple tree I have - 15 yrs old. Apple brown rot has hit the tree a couple times, so I spray it now. I had three other AR blacks - drought killed two of them, two years ago - even with some watering. They had been in the ground four years. Interestingly, those were the only two trees that died out of my 50 fruit trees

I've remember the challenges you have told us about with fruit growing in your area. I admire your effort in keeping on trying. As for the drought killing trees, I haven't seen that here, but the land at my farm where my trees are planted holds water better than average. I have hauled water for trees in the first year, and occasionally water a second year tree. But, after that they are on their own.

Alot of places that sell arkansas black tout it as drought resistant.

They say the tree doesnt bear as many apples too. Any truth to that? Whats been the drop times for this tree?

Was a bit reluctant to buy the tree, mine was a stark bros clearance item. Looked like m111 roots though.

Brown rot? First time hearing that on here.

In SW AR - right near TX, OK, and LA - the AR Black drops Mid Nov. Also, I would not worry too much about the difficulties I have growing fruit because our summers are probably much more extreme than most places. Heat, humidity, and drought are normal - to be expected. 100 deg temp isnt something we pay any attention to other than quit fishing at noon. I water all my fruit trees about 15 gallons a week - usually for two months. If I cant reach a tree with a hose, I dont plant there. I have 1” black plastic pipe running 600 yards so I can reach my orchard. I have had ten yr old chestnut trees die of drought. I dont have winter kill, I have summer kill.

He has a lot of disease issues down there that you won't have.

My AB trees are still young, but I think for their size they produce a significant amount of apples. AB is one of the few trees with large apples that are still dropping in late October here, but where you live, they should easily go into November or later.

PS - I would never buy an apple tree from Stark Bros for fear of getting a B118 rootstock. I had another B118 tree to hit the ground recently. It was one I had forgotten to brace. This time the wind was less than 30 MPH.

Think franklin and arkansas are m111. 99% sure macoun is b118 from them. Think pristine is m111 too.

Ive wised up a bit since then. Cheaper trees in june suckers ya in......

My liberty's, enterprise, a chestnut, and s dolgo are b118. Trying 3 b118 at csmp rhis year sandy soil. Got a williams pride on m111 from turrkey creek. USDA says williams pride doesnt like m111. So fat so good. 1 year and maybe 3.5 feet growth. Grest shape too.

I got a 2 x 11 spot iam going to irrigate with sonething. 25x25 spacing mostly m111. Maybe 10 small diameter spinklers.

I got a wildlife tree row m111s 16 ft apart single line. I might run a drip line and five it emergency water only. Like a week no rain and no rain in forecast. SLN and bluehill crabs as well as 3 galarinas

Growing about 50 seedlings of cosmic crisp and grafting them on b29 for a small espailer setup. Looking for a wildlife winner. Probably drip line that and topwork after i have a bred winner.

How has the growth rate been for yall on Arkansas Black? Mine seems to be slow compared to my other apple trees.

Mines had a year n a half. Bought it june 2023. Looks alot like the other trees.

I bought one two years ago, I really don't remember its current size. I am thinking if this tree a slow grower maybe I should not graft it this year and maybe buy another in the future, maybe a poor candidate for grafting.

Im new to trees, but if you get hot dry spells this is the tree to have. Northerns should have enterrprises like southerners should have arkansas. Let her go n grow

No more B-118's for us either. It's strange - some varieties we have on B-118 have grown straight - others lean big-time. If any of our apples / crabs need replacing, new trees will be on Anty, P-18, or MM-111. Those 3 have anchored well for us with straight trees.

I like AB right off the tree. A bit more tart then, which I like.

A few members have b118 on poor sandy soil and do well. CrazyEd is one of those guys. I feel B118 treated richly causes problems. Well fertilized, quality soil, well watered. I also feel b118 needs to be pruned hard too. Russian B118 was made for poor sandy soils and colder climates.

Have 2 or 3 M7's. Almost feel i should of been doing m7's all along, especially ib my single row north-south 16ft spacing.

Little surprised granny smith isnt discussed on here much. Good warm zone tree and easy to find.

Been very happy with turkey creek, Saint Lawrence nusery, and mehrabyan nursery. whitetail crabs is ok too. Twist his arm a bit and he will yell you what rootstock he had on what. Fall delivery is s very nice plus from him, if you dont mind planting during hunting season.

Granny Smith is one of my all time favorites to eat!

I’ve got a couple here need to plant more, for me they have been biannual but hang into late Nov early Dec if we don’t have crazy winds. Also has been good DR for here also. Mine are on M111
