Native Hunter Apples 2023

I planted five kiowa, five big daddy, and ten Prime Ark Freedom this year. Half the Prime Ark Freedom have died. All the other varieties are doing great. You would think a variety named after Arkansas would do well here - but not mine.
That is strange. Glad you are having luck with the others.

Any change in Williams Pride this year, any better?

I think not quite as good as last year. The crop was smaller and no improvement in terms of a no-spray human apple. Last year and this year the apples would have been fine for deer food.

This Rusty Coat I talked about earlier still has my attention. From a few feet away these apples look like Asian Pears. This could be my sleeper apple for November I’ve been yearning for.

Those RC look like they have russet skins - do they? I never saw a RC in person. They say most russet apple varieties taste really good.

Yes, they are completely covered with russet skin.

If you were going to plant 1 Limbertwig for no headaches / no spray - which one type would you pick? (or do they all need some spraying?)

Black Limbertwig is a very clean no spray apple. Myer’s Royal is too, but in muggy years you might see just a tad of scab on its leaves. Both of those should be great in your area.

Russeted apples have an advantage I beleive. Thicker skin and not red in color, atlrwat most are not. Got yellow jacket issues. I got only 1 apple my my franklin cider tree, however, that one apple looks alot better than any of my freedoms or older mature orchard trees at home. No bug marks.

What other name does Rusty Coat go by?
I think Keener Seedling goes by Rusty Coat and is a late apple. Im guessing that's one and the same. Looking forward to your reports on Advent Pear. I just grafted 3 trees over to that one. Reports are it overbears but hopefully its a good one otherwise.
