Native Hunter Apples 2023

I’m bumping up this thread for a forum member who asked me a question.

Im new to trees, but if you get hot dry spells this is the tree to have. Northerns should have enterrprises like southerners should have arkansas. Let her go n grow
Out of my 50 or so fruit trees, I had/have four AR Black. One is about 15 years old and been producing quite awhile. One has been in the ground for about 6 five years and has not bloomed yet. It was planted with ten other apple trees and is not the slowest of the bunch, but close to it. Had two others, in the ground for three years - planted 50 yards apart - and they both died during a summer drought a couple years ago - the only trees of mine to die that year. I did water them weekly.

They will make an apple here some years with no spray. They will make apples every year if sprayed. They are a late dropping apple, and in the area I live, that means a long period of watering and a long time to protect from the coons and possums.

some places and some summers were real nasty. Know what roottocks the arkansas were on?

Thanks Steve
My bride and I enjoyed looking through your pictures and reading your feedback this evening!
A couple more varieties to add to our 80 tree orchard:)

80 trees isn’t enough for all those younguns! 😆 Glad you enjoyed it Jordan.

2025 is shaping up to possibly be the best fruit year we have ever had. Last year was exceptional and I expected most everything to take a break this year, but most apples and pears are coming right back with a heavy fruit set.

As of right now I have zero frost damage on high ground and only slight damage in my frost pocket. The long term forecast shows one night getting down to 28, which should be safe for high ground, however, I will probably get more kill in the frost pocket from that.

It looks like I will get to try some new apples this year. Galarina is one of those, and I especially look forward to tasting it. It also appears that a lot of my young Blue Hill trees are going to show up good this time.

Crazy how much farther ahead your trees are compared to mine. You're a good 5+ weeks ahead of me!

Yes, location makes a heck of a difference. I've also been topworking wild pears and already have green leaves coming out on some scions.

Same boat Steve! Took a walk in our home orchard with my bride this evening and we are flat loaded! Plums looking good too! Most of our apples are in full bloom right now! Weather looks like it's going to cooperate! Years of patience paying off :)

21F at my house this morning. Glad everything still asleep. Supposed to get into mid 60s by weekend however.

Heck Natives trees are way ahead of mine and I am only 90 minutes north of him. My apple trees are just starting to bloom

His trees are usually way ahead of everyone’s - including fruit production and quality😎

Here are some pics today. The pear is Senator Clark from WG and the four apples are young trees from Blue Hill. The Ed’s Crazy, shown first is breathtaking. Next is Sonofcal, followed by Big Dog, followed by Turning Point.

Note: I edited this post because I realized I had made a mistake. I had posted a pic of Sonofcal and called it Turning Point. Turning Point is the last pic, and it is just beginning to wake up. You can see a few flowers beginning to open at the top of the tree.

Native, how old is your eds crazy crab? I have one in the ground that I planted last year. It was around 3ft when I planted it and is almost double in size now.

My Ed's Crazy was planted in the spring of 2022 and has grown like a sweetgum on steroids.

I will post one more that has grown fast, but this one got some extra watering since it is at my house. All of the others were at the farm and on their own. This is Galarina from BH planted in the spring of 2023.

Some day my fruit trees may actually grow a bud.. 🤣
Galarina in a later bloom group like 3 or 4. Its what I look for right after disease resistance.

Liberty is claimed to be in group 2, but are pretty asleep right now like y enterprise is.

Kerr is well liked on here and have a few, but that one comes out of the gate real fast at home.

Glad to see a turning point today grafted 4 of them on siberian rootstock before dinner.
