Too bad. But thats why ya cant pass them wallhangers. Deer have short shelf lives. Of course if you're sitting on something special that's different.

This year marked my 40th year of hunting deer.
In those 40 years of hunting I have seen a staggering number of bucks. You will be blown away.
In the woods, in season, while hunting, I have seen EIGHT NINE bucks. Yup. Honest. In 40 years.
(not counting button bucks)

(Edit: Thinking more about it this morning, how many other camp members have seen in their years as well, I remembered one more. Didn't think of it because I was with someone else and they were the shooter (and misser), I was just observing from about 100+ yards away. Had they not been there, from where I was the deer would have been well out of slug gun range)

I suppose I should too. I know people who've hunted more than 40 years and never shot a deer.

From Live from the Stand to Live from the Driver's Seat.

Away from the land of 9 bucks in 40 years and back home at work. Where this young fellow just slow walked across the street in front of me in the middle of the day, then let me make a U-turn into the parking lot and roll right past him. (sigh)

Young fellow?

Is there a forkie hiding in the background that I can’t see!

That’s a really nice buck, you should hunt there instead!

Behind that brush is a gas station and a 7-11. Behind me, even worse.
I see more deer in one day here than I will in a decade of hunting where I do.

You aren't the only one hunting tough ground. This is day 4 of our rifle season and none of us have seen a deer yet. Buck "sightings" are not an every year thing around here, let alone harvesting a buck, any buck.

Where is here? What is reasoning?

Central Wisconsin. We can blame the wolves, the DNR, the neighbors, etc. But regardless of all that it's just not that good of ground. Mostly forest with little agriculture, infertile sandy soil, flat as a board. Racks are poor. Food, cover, and bedding all bundled together. Endless network of trail options for them with short sight lines for the hunter. Deer hunting is just one activity we use the property and the area for so I don't really stress over it. Fun (and sad) part is, we celebrate every harvest as if it's a trophy.

That's a good description of my hunting area.
That plus hundreds and hundreds of acres that were clear cut about 10+ years ago. You could bed/hide ten thousand deer in that impenetrable mess and never be able to get near them. But honestly, even before that it wasn't much better, but at least there was more land you could actually hunt and feel like you had a chance.

Wow, hopefully licenses aren’t expensive.

I don’t think I’d necessarily hunt anymore if that was the case, definitely not bow hunt.

For my land, bucks are here for the rut, after that, very scarce. So far we have seen the same doe and fawn every day, as they are a daily regular yard deer. Other than those 2, a smaller buck that ran by. I get pictures at night, but nothing else in daytime. Slow pretty much all around me the during the gun season.
