I have a couple nice looking areas that I've given up trying to hunt since the winds are consistently inconsistent there. I leave those areas for the deer and hunt 100 yards away where the winds swirl less.

I like sitting at grain elevators in line or dumping and watching the chaff (red dog, bees wings) blowing around. The way it swirls and changes directions, or gets caught in a "tunnel" type spot and continually swirls. The best hunting wind has got to be somewhat strong and consistent.

Yeah, that’s a swirling wind caused by topographical and/or vegetative factors. I bet if you were to go 100 feet up above the trees it would be blowing consistently a certain direction. That’s why a lot of people try to hunt “high” in terms of the immediate elevation. Hunting low and in bowl amongst a bunch of trees is super hard unless you have a really strong consistent wind
Iwas pretty near the top of the hill, with an open field about 50 yards behind me.

I didn’t intend to end up in my tree stand but here I am. Walked all around in. It’s like an oasis of green growing vegetation in a desert of brown and white. And the deer don’t seem to care. lol. Tracks all around it, but none in it.

Yote or fox walking one of a million down trees.

This morning”s plan was to watch. I have a problem calling sitting on a utility right of way with a long range rifle”hunting”.with my “waiting rifle”.
But it was 17 degrees and I said nope, nope, nope, this is supposed to be my vacation m, not torture. I’m too old for that anymore I guess

43 degrees now sitting in a plastic patio chair just sort of enjoying the woods. Of course my chances of seeing anything here are slim. Getting a shot through all this crap even slimmer. New growth mess. IMG_5028.jpeg

Sitting in my tree stand one last time. Killed a doe on the right of way last night so I’m pretty much done hunting. Didn’t even bring a rifle, just a revolver. So unless some big buck is dumb enough to walk in close there will be no shooting. Just wanted to enjoy the woods. What an amazing change. First few days of the season were windy, cold snow blown. Now it’s warm, quiet and windless. The only sound (other than the ringing in my ears) are some birds, mostly woodpeckers all around and the occasional car down on the highway. Shame it wasn’t like this all week.

Man what a mess. Even if I never cut down another tree it would take me years to clean off all the down trees

Mess you say? Them woods look clean to me, i'd make a much bigger mess personally!

The rut seemed to start a bit late this year. Quiet during bow and just started to get the deer moving when rifle started last week. Thinking december's 2nd rut is going to be good for late rifle and muzzleloader.

Not much luck in harvested beans at the big property. Giving the smaller parcel with harvested corn a try.

Wisconsin deer season starts this Saturday, and at least around me, deer are gone. I have a family that is in my yard daily, but no daylight pictures from my cameras at all this week, and very few at night. Either they are in lock down, or the wolves have moved back in, and did see one crossing the road a quarter mile away today. Or, the deer have found piles of corn a better option then a food plot. My guess is all 3. Regardless, my son is bringing up his hyper active 4 year old to deer camp this year, that should push the deer away from him.

Heading out tonight and tomorrow with the bow in Ohio for one last hurrah before gun opener.

Would you like to be my neighbor?

Yes. My methods are a bit nontraditional. I tend to broadcast my deep woods corn plots a little later and heavier than most: late October at about 10k# per acre. No fertilizer necessary.

lol you will be perfect! I got a text from a buddy the other day where one of his friends said he had good look putting the fertilizer spreader on the back and spreading corn through his plots as opposed to piles. What an amazing woodsman
