EHD Missouri

Get ready to start seeing a bunch of "bugs in a jug" types of products marketed towards whitetail habitat managers.

I went briefly digging down the rabbit hole to see if there are any known controls of the midges. Looks like there are very few options available. It is a shame, because there are numerous BT subspecies out there that are labeled for various midges of other species. I could see something developed at some point, but that is a looooong ways away.
Play on acronym's but it did actually mislead a friend of mine.

There are a lot of vultures around here as well in general. We have had good moisture all Summer long so we shouldn't really have much midge "habitat". I think I could eat a lot of things before a vulture.

Not really it is intentionally labeled that way. He says a lot of things that cannot be scientifically proven, but that doesn't stop him nonetheless. I heard him on a podcast saying if you fed your deer his supplements, they would be far healthier and thus more resistant to EHD.

Who is that for my knowledge?

I know Lakowsky mentioned using something in one of his videos. I'm sure there are only going to be more.

We just need more chem trails to add more rain 😆

I'm not sure if any of our neighbors have been reporting them, but pretty much everyone around us has been finding dead deer.

Many that are finding them share the same creek that has a bunch of stagnant pools. Those that have ponds that have any kind of depth to them have not found as many or any at all...yet.

At this point we are begging for a hard freeze. We have almost no fall plots above lip high and at this point we need to catch a break.

I emailed pictures and my phone number to MDC. Haven't heard a peep back from them.

Bill, do you have a relationship with your private lands conservationist or local game agent? I find texting works best, but I only experienced a failure to call back one time back in 2018, and he apologized profusely for his failure.

I did note that the WildlifeHeath@mdc.mo.gov email that was set up for the 2023 EHD breakout is no longer active.

My experience with the MDC has been very positive (especially compared to my experience back in the 90s in Minnesota). However, everything rides and falls on the individual agent, for sure.

I have a pretty good relationship with Jason Isabelle in Jeff City. He ran the 5 year Turkey study from 2015 to 2020 and the did a bit of cannon netting and radio collaring turkeys on my place. The local warden transfered and we're now covered by the warden in the county next door. I always had good relationships with the wardens.

Good to know about that email address, that's the one I used but it never bounced back. Maybe I'll text Jason.

He's a tool.

I've heard animals that normally would eat dead deer won't touch ehd deer. Some sort of spider sense I guess. Sucks your farm got hit. Hopefully it's not too bad.

How cold for how long to kill the midges? We were supposed to hit 27 but fell short. It's been under 32 for a couple hours. 30.6 was as low as I saw. 31.1 now

Most pages I have read from state agencies state some version of a hard frost is what it takes, with no details on actual temperature or duration.

Indiana actually says that it is two weeks after the hard frost when the threat of EHD is gone: https://www.in.gov/dnr/fish-and-wil...in-indiana/epizootic-hemorrhagic-disease-ehd/

At least with our farms, most of the water sources are in low areas, which should get a little cooler fortunately.

Here in NW Missouri we had 26 for six hours this morning (with a low of 25.5), so I am hoping the midges and chiggers are done for the season. I have not seen any deer in the creek (which is now dry) which is good, but I am hearing reports of EHD in our area.

Yep I think that ends it ! Good to hear

You got colder than over in our neck of the woods. It only got down to 28. We are hopeful that because the water sources are nearly all in the ravines, that it got at least that cold around these areas.

There has been a steady trickle of photos being passed around by neighbors for all of the deer they have found. We have been trying to encourage them to report the numbers of deer found, but many are reluctant to share for whatever reason. As of right now, I would guess there has been something along the lines of 10-15 found so far that we know of. I fully expect to find several more when we go scouting after the season closes.

Me too. One neighbor has found over 20. I haven't plowed through the timber yet but will this winter. My trail camera pictures have stabilized, low numbers but not declining any longer.
