Spraying plots tomorrow. No rain predicted and little to no wind.

Stand was in a bad access spot right on the field edge so we moved to a tremendous access spot 20 yards off the plot with a blockade of trees from clearing the plot that is appx 150 yards long. Dad can park his car and walk 50 yards into the blind with all the bedding on the other side of the plot.

Was not real fond of the high center of gravity I started out with-

Well kind of a project for me..... Someone else is doing the work. I just bought the materials. :)

Sitting outside enjoying our first campfire at the new place since I bought it last fall. Been coming up quite a bit but its been work work and more work. Feels good to sit back and relax a bit. I've got two whippoorwills in the trees above talking back and forth to each other.

watching the drizzle, searchi9ng for project ideas, wondering how the plots I polanted ahead of last nights rain are fairing, rained harder than I expected. as usual, looking for a new to me disc.

Yesterdays project was to take care of all the customers in the morning, pound out all the round bales, Went to a wedding dance in Siren WI, drank like a fish and played grab ass with all the young honeys! Today's project is to get my head to stop pounding, and get all the bales in the shed if it don't rain. And then take a nap!:eek:

Half were for a new bedding area to help promote buck movement through an area with better hunter access the rest to screen the property. Mix of conifers and fruit bearing shrubs

Tamarack, improved white spruce, plums, hackberry etc....

I often think of planting more conifers but I typically haven't done enough prep work to kill the RCG or TSI I need to get done. Maybe This fall.

We went directly into ground and are trying to keep them somewhat grass by using chemicals. Once the trees are tall enough we will let the Timothy grass come back.

We used a planter for half the trees and hand planted the rest.

I am a huge fan of spruce trees for security and thermal reasons.

We could not swing a burn this spring so we are going to do a chemical kill this fall and then burn and plant our natives.

If we would have battled RCG we would have gone with plastic and conifers!!! I would think conifers would be great on your land by PP.

Will Conifers grow in plastic? I do have quite a few confers growing you just can't see them yet but soe are 3'-4' tall so In the next 5 years they should really take off. The plugs I planted last year (500) did not fair well with no snow cover last year. I replaced 300 and could have used more. Next year I will try another 500+ and am am planning on mowing and spraying the RCG this fall. I figure if you keep planting some have to survive?

Where did you get your trees? I like the trees from EOSW but my back likes the plugs?

I used landscape fabric around some austrian pines a number of years ago. They looked as if the fabric radiated too much heat back at the tree. All the needles near the ground seemed like they got burned. Eventually the RCG swallowed them anyway. Some day I'd like to try again, but with some wood mulch on top to absorb some of that heat from the black.

The RCG I sprayed last fall is still dead, I planted cuttings (with very poor success) rather than plugs. I think I'll spray some "circles" this fall for plug planting next spring.

Are you kicking around the idea of mowing a few weeks ahead of spraying? I wonder if you couldn't get a fantastic kill if you start those weeds over before you spray. Could help clean up your planting area a little too.

MN DNR is where we got them. They seemed very small this year too. Not super happy with them.

In reed canary, my spruce need to be about knee high and with a root ball attached to get 50 or 60% success. I carry them in in buckets, but pick out those spots in the RC that have other grasses.

Keep those spruce shaded on the south and sw side. The spruce are a real struggle in the RC!

I made a circle-the tennis racket-in the RC. Part of the black plastic I removed after 2 or 3 years. The areas where the plastic is still present has the best growth.
It seems to work better with 6 foot or wider pieces of plastic.
