Todays Projects - what's yours?

Call Welters and price out seed because their site is down. Get my plan finalized and order seed in the next couple of days.

Not much I could do today......with my bad back and all. Took a drive to look for a better boat hoist for my fishing boat. Found a fair used one.....price is right.....but made a monumental decision to buy a new one. Too many hoops to jump thru to get the used hoist up to speed, haul it home, and get it into the lake. Gonna wait till fall. At least I reached a decision. :) Another one of those purchases that will "last me the rest of my life". More of those every day. Grin :D ;)
I hope your back feels better, I wouldn't wish that on anyone. I had surgery in 1995 for 2 herniated discs and it was the best thing. I still have my bad days if I over do it but nothing like before. Good luck with it Foggy!

When your legs begin to go numb......surgery may be the only solution. The last surgery.....5 years ago.....worked wonders for me. Prior to that.....I had to slither on the floor to get to the bathroom. They didn't mess with some other damaged disks I have......and now those seem to be an issue too.

I've learned too late in life.....to take care of your back......and your hearing.

OK....I've whined enough about this for a day or so......it's somewhat better today. :)

Yea it took me close to 5yrs to have the surgery, something about the initial docs visit and them talking that there is a possibility of never walking again scared me. But finally the pain was too bad, fianl straw was picking up a gal of milk out of the fridge and dropping to my knees.

Started working on my stump grinder.

Getting a little low on this spool (I have 3 more). 44# goes so fast. :p

Quitting time for today. I need another chunk of 3x3 tubing for the top rail.

Jim......I cannot believe your gonna build a stump grinder. You got way too many fish to fry without a stump grinder project. There is no way you can come out ahead on a project like this......IMO. You'd be far better off to work a few more hours and put those proceeds toward a purchased grinder. Stump grinders are way too complex and tweaky to shop build and save any money.

OK...that's my opinion. ......and I'm sticking to it. :D

I'm into it for about a K right now and I have my wheel, cutters, pockets, screws, most of the steel, most of the bearings, the cylinder, most of the fittings, and the motor. The cutters/pockets/screws were a big chunk of it.

I even got lucky and found a 21x.75" precision plasma cut disk at the steel yard so I didn't have to waste money on corners I was just going to chop off. :D Once I put a hub in it, I'll have to true it up, but that's not all that difficult.

I don't think you've priced these out lately Foggy. ;)

I love making stuff, so since I'm slightly caught up on my products production, I'm building a stump grinder! :D I'm at the market's mercy. I don't do contract work, so I can't run more OT and make more money. I can only offer what I have and wait for people to buy it (which they're doing). I ran production about 50 hours last week and it took me 3 days to recover from it. Being a gimp has it's limitations. I can't work a normal job, my nerves won't handle it. Some days I have trouble with forks (like Friday after doing 4 long days in the shop).

I chose to order the Wallenstein, so I'm building a grinder. Grinder's a little easier to man-handle out of the shop too. :)

Sure wish I had that level of ingenuity...... I can change oil in my vehicles..... Beyond that..... Good luck to me.

I've been using power tools since I was 7. I'm still not sure if my dad was insane or he recognized innate ability at an early age. I wouldn't (won't!) let my nearly 13yr old use tools I was running unsupervised by 9. Somehow I managed to keep all my fingers and toes.

At 13 or 14 years old my Grandpa had me driving the grain truck. I hauled oats in late August back to the farm while he ran the combines.... I backed that truck up to the auger pit and fired up the old John Deere A, B, C,,,,, whatever it was to run the auger PTO.....
Scares the hell out of me to think what I was running at that age all by myself.... I grew hair on my chest alright......

We had a well equipped wood shop in the basement. My dad's rule was if you don't know how to use something, it's off limits. But if I asked, he'd show me and then I could use it. Still amazed my first circular saw kickback was at 17. I'd been using it barely below arm pit level for 6 years. I actually did so much wood construction type stuff my HS shop teacher asked me why I took his class, since I obviously already knew how to do everything he was teaching us. Easy A! :p

I would've hated living on a farm, but I would've loved living in the country. I didn't like the responsibility of my paper route (started at 11) and getting up at 5 am for that. Tending animals or fields would've been a drag for me in my youth. I still hate mornings. I like waking up about 10, but then I'm usually up until 2 or 3 am too.

Jim
You should start a new thread on your grinder. Looking forward to seeing the progress. I love fabricating also. With metal that is, not so much with wood.

When I get more going on it, I will make a new thread. This week is pretty jammed full of fun and excitement (not really; a lot of driving). I didn't think I'd get any fab time in the shop, but my heat treater didn't get my stuff done as soon as they thought over the weekend so I had a window and took it.

I need a grinder in a bad way to get the cargo container up the hill and out of the in-law's yard. There's some stumps along that road that nearly pitched me out of the tractor (I know, I should've been wearing my seatbelt) - they'd stop a tow truck dead in it's tracks. I tried cutting them short with my 88cc saw and started burning the bar from the heat. Those suckers are hard.

I got tired of wood by my mid teens and that's when I started flirting with metal. Now I appreciate both for what they are. I don't enjoy finish carpentry nearly as much as I like framing. For some dumb reason, I really enjoyed building my shop. And for some other unknown reason, I really like cutting down trees. :D

^ Are you planning to mount a grinder like that on your loader? Run it off hydraulics?? or....you must have a skid steer in your future???

Found a Drawloc at he Pawnshop for $100 so jerry rigged a bipod from blind rods and plastic tubing to an old bow I had downstairs and now dad can hunt in the bugs with me -

Kid can hold stupid groups at 30 yards. Amazing what a bow can do when your consistent.

He is hoping to cross tag 10 to 12 yearling bucks this fall.

If he runs short of tags I can have some non hunting friends and family send him some.

He put a note up at the golf course and already got a bunch of phone calls, but thank you for the offer.

I'm running it off the loader (I have SSQA on it) with my 3rd function controlling the swing, curl controlling the depth, and the motor will be run off the rear remote. I'm going to have feet coming off the sides of the SSQA plate so I can park the weight of the front end on it to stabilize it in the cut. No bouncing around like yours. :)

Regarding your stability of the grinder. - We'll see. I hope your right.....but I gotta be showed. Do you have enough GPM to operate that grinder? You may need power beyond to get enough flow....no? I think your plowing some new ground here with that configuration.....and it might be quite a challenge. I hope you pull it off.....it would be nice to have some of the benefits of the front mounted grinder.
