Slow Day... The Best Big Buck State

Ok it’s slow, which state is the Best Big Buck State and Why??

I'd say Iowa still holds the crown for now. Not sure who else could take it away. Probably only the state of Baker has a chance!

Definatly Oklahoma... and not the state north of them.

I’m going to say Iowa. The December gun season makes a big difference. Genetics, great cover and food, all helps.

So does low hunter density and a low state to private land ratio

Rhode Island, I hear its a sleeper state!!!

The numbers don't lie boys, Wisconsin is the clear leader ...

No restrictions to out of state hunters or non-rez land owners like Iowa, cheap non-rez license tags at $165 (Illinois is $450), plenty of public land. If Wisconsin went to shotgun or muzzleloader only like other states, scary what what could be produced.

And by the way we have pickled eggs & northern pike, Hamm's beer & Point Bock beer, cheese, and bacon fat basted eggs to cure that hangover :emoji_wink:

I guess it depends on how you define a big buck… by weight, or by score antler score. By weight, it would be hard to beat some of the bruisers that come out of Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin and the Dakotas. By antler scores, the farm states of Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, and Kansas. For me, the best big buck state is NY, because those are the deer that are in front of me! But if I had to pick one state I’d pay to hunt, I think it would be southern Ohio.

It’d be interesting to see how this data has changed over time. For instance, what are the tallies for they last 5 years? Also, what percentage of overall harvest are those Booners? Booner per acre? Per acre of habitat? All interesting ways to treat the data.

MS boasted a year or so ago that it had the highest percentage of harvested bucks that were 3.5 or older, or some such stat. I found it completely absurd, as the state has no means of quantifying such a thing.

I wouldn’t have expected wisconsin to top the Booner list. The p&y I could see.... seems like every year 125-140 inch bucks are the norm. Wisconsin probably also tops the list for most hunters too probably which makes a difference.

I’d like to sit each one of these people down and explain why their glory is no excuse for being a big mouth.

You won’t find my name in any book. :emoji_wink:

Missouri switched to Iowa seasons and it might be the best state period.

I don’t think you see many Missouri or Iowa locals register their bucks. I’ve seen garages full of 160s in Iowa not mounted or anything.

Good info but not relevant to your question ... you asked ... "which state is the Best Big Buck State and Why??"

Why is Iowa a state someone should pursue if they want a true opportunity as a big buck over IL, KS, OH, MN, & WI?
