Slow Day... The Best Big Buck State

Why would I be hunting if I wasn’t worried about taking the meat home...?

That's a good question, why would you ever leave TX if your only concern is meat? I hear and have tasted that they have the best brisket anywhere ... :emoji_slight_smile:

We do own the brisket market, but every region has a bbq specialty they rock. Biggest problem in my area of Texas is a lack of public land access, a VERY high Hunter density on what public there is, a 70+ day gun season, and a 13” inside spread minimum....
So, I travel. I hunted Oklahoma exclusively this year, and hope to hunt Oklahoma, Colorado, and Texas next year.

I live and hunt in WI and also have hunted Iowa for 20+ years. Iowa wins hands down.... not even close. The reasons are as follows all of which allow a buck to get older and therefore sport a larger rack.
1. Slug only and IA gun season is not during the height of the rut.
2. Less hunters and a much less entrenched deer hunting traditions. Deer hunters in IA have no problem killing does.
3. Iowa is more rural and has much larger tracts of privately held land.
4. A healthier deer herd. Buck to doe ratios that are more balanced

In GENERAL, WI has too many deer and too many deer hunters. There are small areas in WI that are as good as anywhere in the country. If your lucky enough to hunt in these areas good for you. I'm not, so I go to Iowa.

Didn't Iowa recently allow rifles to their gun deer season?

Fun thread. Another question to ask is what is the best state to hunt a big buck in.
TEXAS

Ok, lets say you have saved your money and want to buy a whitetail hunt somewhere for a week. You would like a great opportunity at a 140-165" buck but also would like to know there are at least a few 170" or bigger bucks roaming the ranch you hunt. Where would you go
TEXAS

Long season, large ranches, giant bucks, moderate weather, lots of other wildlife around, catch a 10 lb bass during the middle of the day while resting between hunts. And does anybody really put a deer in B&C anymore??? Don't see that as a good indicator of bug buck country. We have taken a bunch off our ranch and none have ever been entered except a net 192 typical

Take a look at some of the buck contests in south Tx. alone as you make your decision:
Los Cazadores leaderboard
Cola Blanca
Muy Grande
Just to name 3.

How many on here have ever hunted Tx?

Are we talking fenced or fair chase? How much are these hunts?

Whole lot of both available from the 850,000 acre low fenced King Ranch to small [ couple thousand acres ] game fenced ranches to game fenced ranches over 100,000 acres. If you look at the contests you will see most segregate hi fenced from low fenced. Shoppers paradise. Pricing runs all over the board depending on lots of factors; quality of lodging, size of deer, quality of ranch and facilities ...

Iowa does the NR deer hunting right, great system. Ohio manages NR deer hunting very poorly.

Didn't Iowa recently allow rifles to their gun deer season?

Unfortunately they recently added straight wall rifles for the December gun season. Most here think it's a stepping stone to more rifles. There's a whole lot of people pushing these changes who either don't understand the reason for the quality of hunting in Iowa or they don't care.

They don't care.

Yep, going from 100-150 yard reach to 200-400 yard range. That will change things and yes, more rifles will be coming unfortunately.

That actually sounds enticing

There’s quite a few bills in the legislature. Something might pass, but I’m guessing still a long shot.

Nonresident landowner tags is still being debated as well, if you have 80 acres. With a 5 year wait.

Bw11 ... I get that you are projecting what you hope. I think the flood gates are about to open, maybe not now, but real soon. Money talks and politicians are for sale as ever increasing govt costs can only be solved by more tax $$. Maybe Mayor Pete can help you guys ... he did real well in Iowa

well if so their some dumb politicians. 1 million in increased revenue. I know for sure there are groups that would pay more not to have it happen.
Maybe that’s the plan. ;)

The limit on NR is a factor, but the huge key in Iowa is the December gun season. If they mess with that—move the season up into November...the big bucks will die, and Iowa will be just average Joe state.

Wish MO would figure that out.

Minnesota is getting worse. Now adding rifles to open farm ground counties. The DNR wants more deer dead.
