Saw a 2 1/2 y.o. chasing a very large doe. Had a nice set up on the doe at 20 yards but the buck moved her. Tried a shot a 34 yards on the doe but missed. Grrrr. I’m doing a lot of second guessing right now. Nevertheless, it’s great to be out and seeing action.

When I retrieved my arrow, there was evidence of a hit…with a meager blood trail. I’m going in for brunch, willl contact my neighbor for permission (as the doe likely went over the property line) and will track this evening.

Update: After waiting eight hours, I tracked the doe to the property line and crossed over with permission . At first I was thinking liver (dark, non-bubbly). The trail became very hard to follow--one drop every 10 yards or so, then ended after 310 yards with a final drop. I am not sure if it was a muscle hit or vital organ, but the blood trail ended at the convergence of three trails. With the landowners son and daugher-in-law hunting off the east trail, so I was not able to go that direction, but the other two didn't produce any more blood. A disappointing outcome to what was an otherwise enjoyable morning sit.

Took a large doe right at closing tonight. Came in to 20 yards and hit right where I aimed. She went about 100 yards with an easy trail to follow. We've been out of venison for awhile after I got skunked last year. The wife is very happy.PXL_20251025_233806415.jpg

Saturday AM I got to see the double drop buck for the first time in person. He is very impressive, but did not offer a good shot at roughly 150 yards. My son has been bow hunting him for a week now with no sightings, so I left it to him yesterday afternoon and went to my place in Jackson. Saw a doe with fawn last night then a 2 YO 6 pt came in and pushed the doe for a few minutes. I was able to sneak out of the blind while they were all in the plot. First time I have done that.

Enjoyed watching them and look forward to getting back out there as time permits.

I am taking advantage of a business trip to Branson to spend the night at our place in the Ozarks. I am in the soft sided tower blind that we put over the lawnmower plot this summer. The cameras are showing a little bit of action, but much during the day. Still, it is nice to be back in the stand in a different location after last night’s disappointing tracking effort.

Sitting on a small clover / apple tree plot tonight. A row of switchgrass screens it from a bigger brassica / winter rye plot.

Deer feed in the brassica plot, make their way to eat apples and clover, and then get a drink at a waterhole behind me.

This buck followed the script Friday night.

It was a fun sit, and I heard several deer. Shooting light ended at 6:52. On the way out I put up a new camera (6:57). Six minutes later, this guy is posing for the camera.

Knock off pop-tart.

I did finally SEE deer on Saturday. Right before sunset a doe and her fawn started up the hill to the right of my stand. Of course coming up the hill she's looking up the hill and right at me. She knew I was there and never got closer that 50 yards. They backed out into some heavy brush about 70 yards out, then made a big wide circle around me.
And that's the entirety and end of my "bow season", three days. :(

Cameras show deer come there every night I was there, including a very nice (for here) buck. 4AM though don't help me any. lol

I think the only good thing about my stand placement is the evening sun is at my back, which doesn't matter if you're coming up from the side like these two did. Other than that, pretty much everything about the placement sucks. lol But I put it where I did because 1. it was sort of the only tree I trusted. And 2., that's where at the time was the only spot of vegetation. I'd love to put an elevated box blind up in the upper middle of that photo, but there's oh so many reasons that's unlikely to happen.

What you can only sort of see in that picture, but up frame and many more to the left of frame is all the downed trees. Where they fall over and the root base comes with them. They're all thin and very tall, the rocky shale ground leads to shallow roots, lots of blow downs. Not too many I trust my Sasquatch body in. ETA: Actually the tree you see down mid frame... the root ball is just at the left edge of the frame. The top of the tree went all the way past that little stump on the right side of the frame. (it knocked down a white birch with it mid way) All tall, mostly not too big around.
