This spring I top worked 21 antonovka rootstock that I planted last spring. I went to a pruning and grafting workshop this spring that was offered by Turkey Creek. I have been really happy with the results so far as most appear to have taken. There are a few that are barely showing life and 2 that I'm pretty sure the scion is dead on. What is my next step with these? I have been pulling all the shoots from the original rootstock but wondering if I should let one of them grow now so I can try again next year?
Also, when should I remove the electrical tape? Thanks for any help

Not sure of your location but you could try again if you still have scionwood (maybe too late), bud graft this fall, or try again next spring. I would give your tape more time to ensure everything is healed. But be careful, I’ve heard it will take the bark right off, might be better to just make a few shallow slices in the tape and let the tree break it open.

Thanks. I'm in central Kansas. For the graft I wrapped the scion and union with grafting tape and then a rubber band. The rubber band was wrapped with electrical tape so I should be able to just slice through the tape and not worry about cutting any of the tissue. The electrical tape may have been overkill but I was using cheap rubber bands from Walmart and didn't know how long they would last before breaking down

I had 9-10 out of 28 that didnt take. Antonovka has been a good taker though, 4 out of 5 this year.

I T budded on the opposite side of the highest leaf on the rootstock. Seems failed tongue n whip grafts have some dead on the top. I found some smaller scion in good shape, Not much more than a toothpick size. I nipped the bootm of the scion off till I got decent looking cambrium / wood. Then put them in water in the fridge overnight to hydrate before grafting. Going away next week, hope they get watered ok.

You can always leave alone and graft next year, or topwrok the tree in a few years. Antonovka alone with atleast make an ok september deer apple. I got 3 I am leaving alone to see how they are. They were from saint lawrence orchard. Doing that to a B118 and M111 this year too. See what they make.
