CWD

Here is a great place to post all discussions CWD related. We can keep this going forever.

What's CWD? Never heard of it...

Another year passes of being in a CWD hot zone, getting tens of thousands of trail cam pics of deer, and seeing nothing at all other than 100% healthy looking deer. The snipers are working! Time to double the boots on the ground! Wait, what?

I believe CWD was created by the second shooter on the grassy knoll---Adam shiff claims he has spoken to the person responsible but he won't tell me who it is.

CWD... that makes the venison taste better right?

Do you guys remember the qdma member that always posted about cwd? I forgot his user name.( think his name was Terry or ed) He definitely had a sad story. Hopefully he's doing alright.

Terry something..

Slesinger or something with an S. Yes bad story. I think he believed his mother died of a form of it..

Maybe there could be a way for feeding deer to actually treat CWD? Thinking something like mineral blocks that had a small percentage of antibiotics if we get to the point where they figure out something that works against CWD? Yes it would have to be affordable or maybe the damn DNR could use our tax dollars for getting the cure to people that can apply it thru feeding programs---wouldn't that be something if the powers that be actually were encouraging feeding deer to battle CWD. Just a hope and a prayer on my part.

There is a real irony in your post in that research is being done on prophylactic approaches to deal with CWD. The most likely way to provide this will be thru some form of supplemental feed.

Any idea if they think they are close to releasing this to the public? How they would control or keep track of who has used it and where they used it(geographic location). I would be more than happy to be their guinea pig. Sign me up!

Has the theory that a strain of bacteria is actually mutating the proteins been disproven yet? I was hopeful that would end up being true as then there may be an actual way to fight against it.

Now that is a blanket statement without any proof.....
If he is in North Texas, which is where I am at, he is a LONG ways from CWD. There have been a total of 6 deer in the state test positive for CWD thus far. One cluster of 3 deer location in the panhandle (near Dalhart TX), and another cluster of 3 in the El Paso area. The dalhart is over 400 miles from here... the El Paso cluster is close to 600 miles away.

CWD isn’t “everywhere”... it is a growing problem that will most likely end up being “everywhere” but it isn’t yet.

How do you know that he is a long ways away from CWD? The percentage of deer that have been tested is a small percent of the herd. How can you say that there isn't CWD in North Texas if every deer hasn't been tested? If there has been a single deer tested positive in your state (you state six times that many) there is a greater likelyhood that more have it that haven't been tested yet than there is that they don't have it.

Making a blanket statement about my blanket statement. Those two negatives equal a positive. That positive is going to be in a CWD test result. WHEN that happens it will only prove that it IS in your area. What it won't prove is WHEN it came to be in your area. The cat is out of the bag and there is absolutely no way to put it back in until a cure is found. Even when a cure is found it is going to take a VERY long time to eliminate CWD.

Good video. The guy does a really good job of explaining everything clearly.

I can see this devolving into a discussion about carrying capacity and nutrition.

It won't escape farm country. I bet you lay the CWD endemic zones over farm country, they'll line up perfectly and be excluded from the big woods. Humic acid destroys prions.
Even if it does escape farm country, it won't take hold.

Does anyone have documentation of it spreading through food plots, mineral sites, or feeders? I've looked and the only things I've found is statements that include words such as "possible, suspected, or likely ". The researcher in Colorado did say it's all but impossible to spread through urine due to dosage size, but that's all I can find when looking for actual research.

I wouldn't exactly call Colorado, Wyoming and western Nebraska farm country.

How well does humic acid form in arid regions?

You could draw two circles on that map. The Wyoming cluster is all arid, the southern Wisconsin cluster is farm country. Despite all the movement of deer the past 50 years, why hasn't it become endemic in the northern half of Wisconsin or in northern Minnesota? Those one off sites have been traced back people having introduced it. Where there region is dominated by soils high in humic acid (i.e. good moisture, non-farmed land) the dots aren't there.

Look at the map in this story from the QDLGMA: https://www.qdma.com/this-cwd-map-spells-trouble-future-deer-hunting/

Container ships of a deer parts from the big four endemic counties in Wisconsin have been moved all over the country for years. It's not sticking.

I left all the economic collapse and doom porn sites because I was tired of reading depressing news. Now I see it is here too just in another form. Hey I understand CWD is real and think its great that it’s being studied but I think it’s too late to try and stop the spread of the disease thru deer management restrictions. Just look at the attempt to stop the spread of the emerald ash borer by restricting fire wood movement. That was a total failure.

I live and hunt one county away from confirmed CWD cases and realize it will be here soon. I only hunt deer on my land and the left over carcass stays on my land. This is as far as I will go to help with limiting the spread of CDW. My neighbors and I are finally working together to promote QDM and increase the number of mature bucks, while the CDW experts think we should eliminate more of the mature bucks.

I’ve been working towards this deer goal for a long time and I refuse to let fear of the unknown ruin my dream. I figure I have maybe 20 more good years of hunting left in me, my sons have moved away and have no real interest in hunting anymore. Considering this, I don’t think CWD will have much of an impact on me.

I realize a lot of people are concerned about it will impact the future generations deer hunting. Well we all live in an ever faster changing world. It’s sad to say it, but family traditions are quickly disappearing. My guess is in less than three more generations, deer hunting will be practically gone in America. I wouldn’t be surprised if soon you will be hear talk of using some kind of gene drive to exterminate deer in CWD zones.

I hope I didn’t depress too many people here. The moral of my rant is get out there and hunt like there's no tomorrow!
