I suspect deer or coon.

I’ve got a couple of your Big Dog and Yellow Dog out at the one farm. I’m planning on transplanting some oaks out there this weekend. I’ll snap some photos of my trees if I remember could be no leaves left grasshoppers been rough on my fruit trees last month or so.

These are crabs from a seedling in a group exclosure. I have ignored this tree for a long time.

Whitney and Trailman are ripe and starting to drop.
I have a trailman but have yet to be able to try it. Coons have destroyed it twice on me now. Both when it had plenty of fruit.

I had a Whitney but it died early. I think I might have a younger one going now at our hills place. No fruit yet.

I should finally be able to try Violi’s Hanging this year after 7 years. Not sure when to even think about trying it though. No idea on ripening time.

Sandbur,

The big dog any good for eating? Trying to not take up too much yard with a ton of trees. But, don't mind having a few doubles.

I consider Big Dog inedible, for humans.

Decided to go "whole hog" with my first try ...
sweet november, lockdown, trailman

and some arkansas black, big 10 apple, rifle deer pear and bunch of persimmons.....

Sandbur,

Got 2 liberty, 3 30-06, saturn peach, kieffer pear, gn pear, bartlet pear, golden delicious, granny smith, franklin cider, freedom, redfield, mcintosh, big dog, enterprise, crossbow, pristine, trailman, and signal fire.

In the Nursery: Got some more entreprise, liberty, blue permain, harrison, and a few kerr. Got AWHO, droptine, and crossbow in those fancy grow pots going up north or at the in-laws 450 acre corn/soy bean fields.

Got a few spots more, maybe 3 more, and might remove one or two 30-06.

Thinking if you had that, plus 3 to 5 more. What would you plant? Chestnut died on me and a 2nd saturn peach for the wife.

At home looking for a blend of hunter / deer attraction. Likely doing mostly applesauce, some cider, and some cooking. Not big fresh eaters. Big CAR and insect ara. Zone 5 borderline 6, somehwta dense clay, not horrible though. Home used to be apple orchard.

Was thinking sundance, Maybe a 2nd enterprise, a pearmain, and maybe chestnut again, maybe for #5 cranberry ot kep a kerr at home.

Think what you're doing at your place jives well with what I want to do at my home. Trees get ot more care than typical hunt camp trees. Irrigation, several sprays, winter and summer pruning, fertilizer.

I can’t give you valid suggestions for your USDA zone as I am zone 3/4 . I have lots of red cedars and CAR is a seasonal problem. During this dry summer, I have not seen much CAR.

At my location, I would keep chestnut, trail, and Kerr near the house for sauce and snacking. KinderKrisp is a great little apple and is just starting to ripen.

I have Zestar, Prairie Magic, and Hazen near the house and they go in the apple sauce blend. Goodland and September Ruby are starting to produce. St Edmunds Russet has it’s first crop. I tasted one Franklin.

I know I am just rambling and didn’t answer your question. Keep Trailman, Kerr, and chestnut near the house. Maybe Kk. Taste may be different if you don’t have the winter chill hours.

A buddy just told me that Pipsqueak is preferred by him and his wife over chestnut crab. I grafted one years ago and it failed. I will probably add it to a tree somewhere and hope I live long enough to sample it.

Chestnut Crab is starting to drop and is very tasty. This would be my first choice for an early season Minnesota bow hunter. It probably would work well in northern Wisconsin / UP as well.
