If I were you I would pay close attention to disease resistance and figure out which diseases are most problematic in your area.
And then consider the path of buying a smaller number of trees but giving them excellent care (as opposed to half-assing a large number of trees).

When (not if, but when ) you fall victim to the addiction of grafting, there are tons of people on this forum who will gladly send you free scionwood, myself included. This forum has helped me tremendously in getting scion to grow my orchards.

I will say the bad part about the trees Native grows are they aren’t always easy to find. The older limbertwig heirlooms are usually grown by nurseries like century farms wildlife group or big horse creek. Planting these and caging can get time intensive too I think my dad and I put 30 in the ground over two half days. If you can find someone that fences those 300ft rolls of woven wire can be had for 150 last time I checked they might also let you have the scrap cut offs. Keep us updated and let me know if you ever need scions I’m down in south central I would be glad to share.

Yeah, I'm more than likely limiting myself quite a bit in keeping my selections to those of Native Hunter in terms of apples. We hadn't really discussed pear varieties much though. Finding pears and those varieties of apples from the same nursery is really tough. I'm wondering if focusing on pears might be a better option.

I might have to search online and perhaps there's some nurseries in Southwest OH, Southeast IN, or Central Kentucky. I bought some fencing for pears last year and all but 1 tree from Tractor Supply died. I still have them standing in spots. After planting, I think I recall seeing some extra fencing in the barn, so I'll have to check on that too. I know I'm going to need to get some good T-posts or something, although tobacco sticks worked for the ones I have out now. I spent 7-10 days planting last year, some of those by myself, so I know all about the hard work it is!

Most of the spots I have are spots where I can only put 5 or 6 trees. That makes things a bit more complicated when a tree needs a pollinator too.

You might look at Sunbright farms. I think they are in Bowling Green. You can find them online. I bought some wild crab and wild deer pear from them last year. All 15 of my bareroot seedlings are still alive. I used 5 foot tubes and most of the pears came out the top in one growing season.

I really like their prices. They're a long, long drive away being at the other end of the state, but shipping wouldn't be a problem. What most here have sort of recommended or wish they had done differently was plant cultivars of known varieties. I don't think the cultivar is known with Sunbright Farms, similar to Nativ Nurseries who I thought about ordering from. There's an interesting option in Stanford, KY with Peaceful Culture Permaculture Heritage. Their prices seem to similar to other nurseries offering known varieties at a bit under $30 a tree. I'm looking around for possibilities though, so Sunbright is a great option at those prices!

Sitting in my turkey blind down here by my deer pears. The drought last year really hampered their growth. I was down here fixing tubes and stakes that were blown over in a storm last week. Several of the trees were not out the top of their 5 ft tubes then, but I am down here right now and all of them are out the top.

Ive got 10 of the Nativ Nursuries deer pears. I planted 5 in 2016 and 5 in 2017. They grow like weeds. Time will tell on the fruit.

Did you ever get any pears on those trees ?
