I think most of my Swamp Bur Oaks are toasty crisp….might try to water them one more time, but it looks like a lost cause.
Just not enough rain.

Are those the ones you just planted this season from Itasca greenhouse? I'm gonna try 10 more burr oak gamble from Idaho again next year. Supposed to have excellent drought tolerance, but I think getting them established that first year is critical.

Yes, it’s been really dry. Might get 50% survival??

Here are mine today, they're doing very well.

Checked mine over the weekend. They are looking great as well. Here is one of the better ones I came across. That is a 5' tube. The tree was planted as a 20-30" bareroot tree last year. View attachment 34729

Here is the same "bottomland burr oak" today that is pictured above from May 1st. You can see the odd curve right at the top of the tube, this was due to the top of the tree being held down by the bird net. I am thoroughly impressed with this growth, these were planted in April of 2020 as 20"-30" bareroot seedlings.

I incorrectly called this tree a bareroot from last year in previous post. Its actually a burr oak plug from Itasca greenhouse. This tree was planted in last week of April, 2020. It was a foot from the top of the 5 foot tube last month. This month it is already out of the tube. My burr oak plug from Itasca last season all look great. I think the fertilizer I applied this spring was worth every ounce of effort.

Burr oak gamble planted this spring from U of Idaho looks GREAT. I just planted 5 of them. They have only been in the ground for 2 months. Some of them are already past some of my swamp white oaks planted 2 years ago. I will definitely be planting 10-15 more of these next year. Hope they can handle my winters cause I'm really impressed with their performance with the abysmal growing conditions we have had. I gave them each a gallon of water the other day.

Drought has been tough on the smaller planted oaks for new acorns...pics of a Bur Oak (lots of small acorns) and a Swamp White Oak (acorns basically never developed fully).

I have 5 rows of CRP trees going in this spring in Iowa. There will be 2 rows of oak , Swamp Bur Oak, and probably Red Oak.

This is in good soil, I anticipate good survival and fairly fast growth . I’ll post some pics in April.

If you order from Idaho you should try a couple burr oak gambel. Sold out for this year. I'm adding 10 more this spring. Supposed be the earliest producer of acorns for oak trees. I think I am pretty much done planting oak on my property after this year. Its full of natural red oak. I have a bunch of burr oak, swamp white oak, and now burr oak gambel. I have 100s of red oak hidden below aspen and ash trees that I slowly cut down to release them.


Burr oak Gambel from what I understand is a much shorter more bushy type of oak (under 30 feet). Hopefully it can survive in bear country. I have seen them really thrash some younger oaks where I hunt.

The website was super sluggish this morning. Concordia oaks sold out in a few minutes. I still placed a waitlist order. You may want to do the same.

At least with other woody species that sell out, they will often still be able to fill the order.

Oh yea, have a $296 charge for one of my attempts with no order number. 3 more times kicked out and finally was able to get an order through for everything with the exception of ninebark and the concordia oaks. VERY disappointed this year.
