Catscratch House and Habitat build

^ Nice Rig!

Me?.....Level organized all right....lol. Hey....I'm retired and I got nothing else to do at times. But.....I am far from organized. Grin.

You are really well equipped with so many of the right things. I'd like to be a neighbor to you!

Neighbors... Imagine the possibilities! We'd probably be highly compatible. I'd weld up corner posts for ya and you could no-till my plots. Not exactly a fair trade though, I'd have to take ya fishing once in a while to offset the difference.

Am I the only one that would go mental if a 6' long snake crawled up on the dock with them? I'm guessing that snake was between you and shore? Hope that wasn't a rattler.

Great to hear the bass are coming along. Are you starting to see the crappies get thin that you're trying to get their numbers down?

It was a Copper Headed Water Moccasin. Highly venomous AND poisonous! Their aggressiveness is said to rival that of the Black Mamba (not Kobe). I'm actually surprised it didn't see through my dangling lure scheme and jump on my face. Suppose a guy gets lucky once in a while.

Crappie have been difficult to catch the last 4-6 weeks. Brush in 10ft of water is usually my hot spots but that hasn't been working. Right now I'm either catching them jigging on the bottom (10ft deep), or along the weed line in 4ft of water. Instead of catching 20 in an outing I'm catching 5. Kind of weird. I wonder if the snake has something to do with it?

Screenshot_20240725_115213_Gallery.jpgAverage bass has been 15 inches and just shy of 2lbs. Of course I'm catching smaller and bigger, but a 15 incher is common. Relitive Weight calculator has them at 102%. That's outstanding in my opinion!

The crappie are calculating out at 80% RW. Not so good. Might indicate a lack of smaller forage? A crappie has a smaller gap so they have less options for food.

Moved hay at dad's this morning. He normally gets around 100 bales off his place. Got 162 this yr!

Checked on his dove field. It's looking awesome too! Will be time to burn soon.

How long before season do you have to burn it for them to really find it? We had a bumper hay year as well. Good times this early spring!

Good deal! Glad you guys have had a great yr so far. It's nice to get a rain once in a while isn't it!

We usually like to burn a couple of weeks before season but dad is considering burning later this week or next week just because it's ready.

That's a hell of a crappie in my book! I wonder if you aren't going to get a food chain boom now that your water has come up.

TONS of little minnows out there right now. See schools of them jumping when you throw a spinner or a bass decides to feed. Everywhere you look is baby minnows. I think they are Golden Shiners but they're to small for me to id. I'm hopeful!

The welding cart is still being revamped. Slapped a coat of "rust-proofing" primer on it today. It was very much needed! I hate rebuilding stuff that could have been prevented, and this sucker was RUSTY.

Speaking of rust... one of the disc's wheels had rusted the valve-stem hole out. Can't weld a patch to rust so a washer and some JB-Weld and it was ready for a tube. Figure the wheel being on a disc will only get downward pressure on it, never torque so it should be strong enough. Took her for a test spin afterwards.. worked beautifully!

Came in last night, grabbed some beer and seeds, then told the wife I was going to single handedly make it NOT rain overnight. She laughed and said "it's damn near 80% chance of thunderstorms, you're not going to turn that front". I showed her, not a drop of rain!

I posted this on another thread but want it on here for the future. Very early plant date for me, but I usually TnM so cool temps and rain are usually super important. I'm hopeful that with discing I'll get an earlier and taller plot before winter hits.

Cow peas.

The ground was deep and fluffy. Packed it after spreading cow peas and sunflowers. May have pressed the peas and sunflowers too deep. Will find out.

Wow that dirt color! Fertile
It's beautiful dirt! KS hilltop. Bedrock 3ft below the surface. Last 10yrs have been my own mix of TnM in effort to build more soil, and worms. Was originally good looking soil before I started in on it, but only for the top 3/4 inches... then it turned to clay. Now it's deep/dark and soaks water like a sponge. I'm sure I'm setting it back with the tractor but oh well, it's only a small spot and it gives me room to experiment some ideas.

What's on the idea board?

No real plan SD, just some general ideas. I've gotten real use to no inputs other than seed. I'd like to have the benefits of buried seed for a bigger window of planting time, but don't want to give up self fertile systems. My growing season is often marked with triple digit temps and long dry spells. Fall moisture has been spotty at best. Looking for a little more control over when seed can germinate and how long a seedling will survive.

You didn't do it be yourself,I broadcast radishes last night also just know we would get enough rain to push in ground.

Sunflowers can be 1-2" deep and if it doen't crust over they will be fine.
