Broke a guys heart permission to track denied

I feel bad but I just turned down a request to track a deer.

guy has permission to hunt a 40 next to me. (Doesn’t own it, nothing invested) It has 5 acres of timber and balance is a cut hay field (think golf course.)

deer headed right for a finger on my place that my son has been after a good deer from, he beds in there. It’s not the deer my son is after that was hit. I know this because my son watched him until dark yesterday. Deer in question was hit before dark.

feel bad but I’m not blowing my sons hunting because the guy decided he could kill one on 5 acres. I promised When the season was over I’d search for the deer and if found he would be my first call. Chances are it’s spoiled by now anyway so the meat is useless.
Also we’re talking a drip of blood every 10 yards or so.

Idk are we taking deer of a lifetime or just a scrub buck. Buddy shot his biggest deer ever last weekend. Waited several hours to track good blood crossed a property line and was denied access. What is you just good the guy to come back at 10 pm and he had 1 night to search. What if your son shoots his best buck ever and it goes to his 5 acres? When my daughter shot her first deer cross the property line as well when I asked for permission the man was very nice he said my son-in-law is hunting in that area they're leaving at 3 you can check after 3 p.m. I never want to ruin anyone's not looking for a deer there's always a solution he might be your neighbor for a long time, Golden Rule my friend Golden Rule

Totally agree with your decision. No problem with guys that want to hunt these small properties but they better have prior communication with adjacent landowners

Ugh that's tough. I get both sides. But better hope that a buck you shoot doesn't end up over there. I won't let a deer rot if it can be found. Just my 2 cents.

Here in Texas, we have an obligation to do everything we can to recover a deer. If permission is denied, it is common practice to call a warden who finishes the track with you, typically regardless of landowner consent.

I totally understand your position, especially being a kid after the buck, but if it were my deer that was shot I would feel obligated to at least try having a game warden get me the carcass.

I've never denied access, yet. I'm prepared to real soon with certain line sitters. I'm fully aware it's a risk because it can go the other way. But I don't hunt near the lines of these guys and I don't take risky shots. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Every situation is different. Deer get lost behind posted fences all the time. It's the chance people take. I'm sure Bill knows the shoe can be on the other foot.

A drip of blood every 10 yards? How far from where it was arrowed to into your property.

Have no issue with your approach. Let a neighbor come across the fence once to track a deer he said he arrowed. Told him to only go alone and only go 50 yards from where the deer crossed and call me if he found blood. He got 3 buddies and they walked all over the entire creek bottom. Had them on 2 different cameras wandering all around. They never found any measurable blood or the deer.

Now i tell him to let me know where the deer crossed and I will go look for blood. His stand is 30 yards from my fence line. He has arrowed 4 deer that have crossed over and none have been found even when I go out with my dog. We have a good relationship and he trusts that I would not jerk him around. I let him and his daughter doe hunt on my place in the Dec doe hunt.

Talk to the property owner and makes sure he understands your reasoning. There needs to be legitimate blood sign to support a mortal wound.

Yeah I’m torn over it.
I’ll know if it’s dead in a few day if the birds start. It went across my neighbor first. Based on the blood he saw he didn’t think it was a good hit. Neighbor said if was bleeding like a good hit “He” would have crossed my fence. Which he has permission to do.
Stand was 15 yards from my neighbors line and 50 yards from mine in a corner where the properties meet.

in 14 years we’ve had one cross a line. That stand was removed and we don’t hunt the area any more.

not trying to defend my position, I get both sides. Also if he would have asked beforehand he could have factored my no into the decision on where to hunt.

I'd of let them in, it sucks, but I've done it before and kind neighbors have let me retrieve on them. In Iowa you can pursue a blood trail without the land owners consent. I don't like that law because it can be abused and used as an excuse to push a neighboring property.

I wouldn't sweat it. As you said the birds will be a tell or the yotes will be howling up a storm next night or two.

Sounds like you and your neighbor have a good agreement worked out.

There are plenty of mortally wounded deer that don’t bleed a lot. So a drop every 10 yards shouldn’t at all be a factor on if a deer dies or not. I go as far to say that since it’s still bleeding maybe the odds are better that maybe it will die. Also 5 acres is plenty to take a deer down with if the shot was great. So I don’t fault anyone for hunting a piece they have access too. Sometimes things happen at release, deer takes a step forward, turns etc. me personally, I’d let him track it or even help. But I get where your coming from. There will be a time when the shoe is on the other foot. Maybe not for you but someone else in your hunting party.

also I’m not saying this about you Specifically but just people in general about deer hunting/land. They sometimes like to claim land that isn’t there as their own and use it in their strategy. Whether it’s a neighbors field, small wood lot, etc. people who own it or allow permission have every right to hunt it. You also have every right to not let him on property. Just make sure the reasons are just and not out of jealousy or spite because they sat there. Deep down If it is, let him track it, you’ll feel better about it in the long run. If it’s not and it’s truly the reasons you listed above. Then don’t think twice about it, you told him if you find it you’ll call him. Sucks for him but that’s the way things go sometimes.

We wait all year for these couple weeks. You worked very hard (I’m assuming here!) to buy your own private piece of heaven. I have zero problem saying too bad...we will wait till December and go look. I wouldn’t feel bad at all honestly.

I got called out to track a really big Alabama deer here a while back......We had to go into a prime bedding area to look for him that the hunter had cell cams set up all around due to this deer being in there......He knew every buck that was using the bedding area and got pics of them regularly.....Well, we stomped out this thicket pretty good....we finally found the buck alive and jumped him up in the middle of it.....Long story short....we spent several hours walking that bedding thicket out looking for this deer.....The hunter calls me a few days later to tell me that the big deer is back on camera and all the other ones came right back in after we left that night as if nothing had happened...

Now, that's not to say that you can go in there once a week and do this......it'll have an impact eventually.....but just going in and looking for a deer every once in a while probably doesnt make much difference unless the deer are just extremely pressured to begin with

i personally don’t think searching at night through areas has a big effect on deer. During the day a different story. I probably wouldn’t have let the guy search himself in this situation but just me I would have told him I’d go out and look. A lot depends on if he’s a nice guy and was really sad about it or just, well you know. Entirely your call I don’t know the whole situation so your obviously the best at making that decision. as an aside I give permissions on such things by ratings. Immediate landowners. Higher priority. Further neighbors medium priority. People with no connections and just there. Low priority.
