Thanks for your patience as I have been out of the office to attend a couple conferences lately.
Baiting is a complicated topic and one that I could write a support piece for, or condemn, just depending on what the goal is when using it.
Regardless of my personal feelings on this item, I believe that baiting for deer is here to stay. That is, unless there is outside political pressure to remove it, which I don’t see happening. Many of our hunters don’t know how to hunt without it, and in the times of declining hunter participation rates, the department won’t do anything to lessen that participation. We also have a deer problem in 2/3s of our state and baiting is a good tool to get deer off the landscape when used effectively.
I appreciate you writing me in reference to this topic. Sorry my response doesn’t align exactly with what you’re wanting to see, but hopefully you can understand this for the delicate topic it has become.
